gel coat vs topcoat base paint

I was told not to finish my top part of my transom with gel coat that it is only used when starting a new boat in the mold that now i need to use awlgrip topcoat base paint. But what about the metalflake look. man I got way too many different answers I really need help. The patch I am covering is on the top of the transom that I cut off and refleberglassed its 2 inch wide and 34 inches long.:(

Well you should probably repost this in the Restoration forum and also do a search there vvvvvvv. This topic has been discussed a lot. I can say that there are lots of topcoat paints. Awlgrip is one, but there are at least four more brands worth considering. Also there are two-part and single part epoxy based paints. Generally the more money the better the stuff, but not always. I have recently decided to paint with Epifanes and that was due to this: Video comparison Click the "video" tab and it may help you some. (I can't get the actual video link to work right . . .)
