Gelcoat Color Match Problem

I have a 1979 Aquasport 19 Family Fisherman that I'm doing some gelcoat repair on. Having a ****ens of a time getting the color match close enough to suite me. Boat is kind of an off-white/cream color. I need to find out what base colors went into the original batch. I've been trying combinations of white/black/brown and getting nowhere. There must be something else. I sent a note to Aquasport, but haven't heard back. Can someone pass along a little advice? Thanks.

Re: Gelcoat Color Match Problem

when autobody shops need to color match, they use a device called a colorimeter to measure the wavelength of the reflected light. This reading is then analyzed and the software will output the required mix to get the perfect color.

I would think that this could also be done for Gel coat. Could you check with where you bought the Gel coat and see if such a service is offered?

Good luck

Sun has done you in.Chances are that if you remove part of the rub rail, under that will give you the right color of the gelcoat. That off white can be match first by making a small batch mix of light tan(about 1 oz). Then with another batch of white, add the tan, drop by drop till you match.Trick is,take a stick after mixing and put it on the boat.Spot by spot, just a drop.NO MEK till you match. It will take some time,do it in the sun. After matching, use some acetone to clean up those spots.
