Gelcoat or Paint respray

I'd like to know people thoughts on doing either a pain or gelcoat respray.

I've had a good look around and there is pro's and cons to both methods with price and lack of options regarding the gelcoat.

The main reason for people avoiding paint is due to the reduced lifetime of the job and the possibility that I will need to go over it again in 10 or so years. However, the boat in question is a 16ft Ramsay ski boat that spends the majority of its life in a shed and under a cover. At most, the boat will see about 15 days in fresh water per year. Given that it's not going to be hit with anchors or chains and is really not in a harsh environment for long periods, would a paint respray be a much more viable option to the gelcoat?

The boat is already 40+ years old and I'd love to keep it original, however if a respray can achieve the same look for a lot less money, then I think it should be an option.

Thoughts?

Gel can be a lot of work to make look "right"....most factory gels were made in reverse order in a mold, so they pop out straight...recreating that with a spray would take like 30 or 40 mils laid up, then half sanded back off to fair it.

Paint is much easier to apply, and most boat polyurethanes and enamels look good without any color sanding...1 coat epoxy primer, 2 coats of a LPU or hybrid enamel and its likely to be good to go.

Both methods require the about same amount of prep...
