Gelcoat Repair options for this damage

I guess it is mostly just wear from the previous owner pulling up on sandy beaches. It is a 1994 Monterey. The glass is all solid and she doesn't leak at all. What product would be the best for me to do laying on my back. I have read of urethane and gelcoat. It doesn't have to color match and won't be seen. I just want it to be as durable as possible. I will have to feather back and then apply whatever product. What is the best, and what would be the best bang for the buck for me.

Welcome to iBoats!

I would sand and feater it out with 80 grit. I would then purchase a PreVal Spray kit right here on iBoats. Less than $10 bucks.

Then clean it all with some acetone and mix up and spray on 3 coats of Gelcoat. Sand it smooth with 400 to 800 grit. buff it out and you'll be good to go.

Would you use the Gel-Kote product, or what product would be the most durable?

Nope I would use the Real stuff. Check with your local boat dealer to see if you can get some Real Gelcoat and reducer (PatchAid) locally. If not get some from www.USComposites.com YOu will need some WAX to add to the final coat so you can sand and buff. 3-4 coats to build it up to 20 - 30 mils thick. Clean your sprayer before the gelcoat sets. You only got about 15 mins so mix a little at a time. Be quick!!!! Have acetone on hand and have your ducks in a row.

Personally I would slap a Keel Guard on there..

For about 100 bucks and 30 min of time your DONE .

Gelcoat.. your going to have to buy All this stuff for application..ordering..etc.. ( I dont think CCP or USComp will ship anything less then 5 gal ).

Keel guards are very cheap for this if its ok with you

I did a lot of looking at the price for the gelcoat, mold release or pva, wax for the final coat, sanding stuff, and time. I then talked to my boat dealer and he highly reccomended a place called custom fiberglass in my town. I called them up and he was extremely knowledgeable and said it is $150 for a keel repair like mine. filled if needed, sanded, 3 to 4 coats of the real gelcoat to make 15 to 18 mils thickness, finish sanded and buffed. I'm dropping her off Friday and he said it would be ready by noon Saturday. Then Maybe next season I'll put on a keel guard.

I dont understand here....your going to put this boat over for the season right ? .. how much to install a Keel guard ?

For the money you would save now...install a guard..( if your gonna do it in the future ).
