Gelcoat repair question

There is a small, approx 1/4 inch by 1/2 inch chip out of the hull gelcoat near the bow (see pics). I'm not concerned about making it real pretty. Seeking recommendations on simple, inexpensive repair methods/materials. If nothing is done to it before splashing this season, is there potential for it to cause further problems this season?

The hull is white? If so, mix up a bit of marine-tex and apply it with a putty knife. A scotch-brite pad before it gets real hard can save sanding effort.

White marine tex. really, anything similar will do. More trouble and $ than it's worth, also you can mix fiberglas powder in resin/hardener to make a paste.

Next time the coast guard fires one across the bow, stop.

Re: Gelcoat repair question

I had an opening like that on my Sea Ray. I went to the Sea Ray dealer, they looked up my hull and gave me the exact color gel coat repair kit. I think it was just under $20. My Gel Coat is Pearl - if I would have used white it would have stood out. After wet sanding and polishing, you can't tell it was there...

Also, I had my opening for a couple years. I was worried about doing it incorrectly and waited. I kicked myself because i didn't repair it sooner. It's real easy to do.

Try a Wellcraft dealer and give them your Hull ID, I'll bet they'll have your color.

Thanls all.

HC - I tried to stop! Actually it was from haul out day last November with high winds, hail, and an opposing current in the Upper Niagara. Are you sayin' if I'm not concerned with aesthetics, I can just leave it?

no I wouldn't leave it b/c you have exposed fibers and especially at a place where water will get pushed in, plus you have freezing weather, so at least duct tape it. Short term no harm will come from using it like that a few times.
