Gen 2 bellows and valve cover vents

Trying to kill two birds with one stone. I recently bought a newer boat with a merc gen 2 drive. The top of the bell housing had a chunk missing so I decided to rip everything apart and replace everything. So the question is, Do I need a special tool to install the drive bellows? ( that ring on the inside?) Secondly, how could the bell housing have a chunk out of the top but everything else looks fine. No cracks anywhere else. Lastly, the boat has a 5.7 liter chevy motor and I noticed on one side the valve cover looks like it has a pvc valve and the starboard side has nothing but a 90 degree plastic fitting. No hose, nothing but the fitting. Any help would be a step the right way. Thanks ahead for your input.

Don't know what year we're dealing with, but most merc manuals are up in the adults only section.

The boat is a 1998 larson. 5.7 liter chevy. The starboard valve cover just has an elbow. No hose, just vented to the air. The crack ontop the bellhousing is at the very top. Not near the mounts at all. At the very top of the bell. Secondly, do I need a tool to put the drive bellow sin? That metal ring?

There is a special tool (part 91- 818162) for installation of the sleeve.

I used a can of Mercruiser's Power Tune (92-802878 57) instead. Sprayed the mating surfaces and simply used my fingers to install the sleeve. Held it in place until the Power Tune evaporated and all was well. I believe this was at the suggestion of Don S.

It looks like the elbow side gets tubing (8M2012906) that goes from the elbow to the flame arrestor.

Thanks for the info. There is no sign of tubing ever being connected t the elbow and nothing to hold it in place. What is this power tune stuff?

Do you have a picture of the top part of your engine? What I'm interested in seeing is the valve covers and the connections at the flame arrestor (check for one or two nipples towards the top of your flame arrestor).

It may look something like this.

Yep, no nipples on the flame arrestor. That is exactly what I thought I would find. As for the bellhousing. I will take pics this eve.

check for one or two nipples towards the top

You need more nipples in your life.

IIRC, there was a retainer; a long thin metal strip that went on top of the flame arrestor, but below the top cover. Part 7 in the picture attached, part 805313 I think is the one for your application.

I am guessing something rolled off the platform? Couldn't find any other damage but I figure I should replace this thing.
