Does the shift cable need to be replaced with changing the bellows? I see in the Merc manual that the "shift cable should be replaced as an assembly only". Does this mean that the cable must be put back assembled/whole/new? Or, just not to try to replace individual pieces of the cable assembly? I don't think any of the bellows have been replaced and I'm trying to do everything I can now to have an easy spring launch. I plan on replaced the u-joint bellows, checking/replacing the gimbal bearing and u-joints, replacing the shift bellows, and replacing the exhaust bellows with the exhaust tube. Anything else I should check while I have the thing apart?

Ayuh,... No way I'd dig deep enough to do the bellows, without changing the complete lower shift cable at the Same time...
Also the water hose, along with the trim sender, 'n trim limit switch if you use 'em...

I just got the boat and have no idea what was maintenance has been done. The previous owner bought the boat in 2007 from a broker. I asked him if the bellows and impeller had been replaced and he asked me "what are those?" I have no problem replacing anything if it needs it. I didn't know if the shift cable was something that was regularly reused when replacing the bellows. Yes, I'm replacing the water tube also. I just did the impeller, so at least that's done.

Just made the order. Another $250 poorer. Everything but the trim senders.

Consider the $250 an investment against a lot more $$$ down the road for an outdrive overhaul! Pay a little now, or a lot later.

That's the way I'm looking at it. Preventative maintenance is always easier than major repairs.

Halfway there

Halfway there

Well, it's off. Nothing too difficult, but not fun. Hardest part was getting the engine alignment right. Very hard to get to the adjuster nuts on the motor mounts. The good: Gimbal bearing was in good shape. Plenty of grease, rolled freely, and no lateral movement. The bad: I broke the though-hull fitting for the drive lube monitor. I see no possible way of replacing it without pulling the engine, so I have to disable and block it off for now. Anyone know of the easiest way to do this? I was thinking of filling the fitting with epoxy and removing the anti-dribble valve(the male one) from the bell housing. Hopefully I'll get everything back together this Saturday and button it up for the season.
