Gen IV Chevy 454 Reverse Rotation Question

I have a 1987 454 reverse rotation inboard. I have used it with 71c and it was fine. Recently I decided to upgrade my trans to a ZF Hurth, and they only accept standard rotation. The engine is on a closed cooling system and runs awesome and I want to keep it. I have been getting conflicting information about reverse and standard rotation, and I want to try and get the skinny on what it is. Here is the info I have received.

1: Only the crank is turning in reverse. Replace the timing set, seals and the starter and I am good to go.

2: Completely rebuild the engine, I have to replace everything to change rotation.

3: You can't change rotation, you have to buy a new engine.

Is there anyone out there that can give me a honest answer? I feel like the guys telling me the #2 info are trying to get over on me and make a lot of money, and the #3 guys are just trying to sell a motor. The older mechanics, and boat guys are telling the #1 info. I want to keep this engine, it has been good to me. I just need to know the straight info so I know where to go from here.

Change the cam and starter with std rotation parts, and it'll run STD rotation

Check the gear on the distributor. Many times they use a reverse cut.

Re: Gen IV Chevy 454 Reverse Rotation Question

Changing it to standard takes a bunch of work. The things listed above are correct but your not done.
The groves on the main seal will be wrong.
The pistons will be offset the wrong way.
You will need a timming chain set.

I would stay with the velvet drive. you can get a used 1:1 for $200.00

Ditto. Is it a delco EST ignition? 71C's transmissions are internally identical on a standard and reverse engine. The only difference is the front pump is re-indexed (rotated to pump fluid with a reverse driven input).
