I will admit that I am completely new to boating still after 2 summers of owning. I have changed the oil about 5 times by self, drained and fogged each winter on my own, re-upholstered, added a cd player and speakers, and also changed lower unit oil a few times (the wrong way i think).

The oil is easy enough, the draining and antifreeze as well. now comes the lower unit.

boat is an 85 bayliner capri with a 305 I/O and the wonderful OMC outdrive. I have seen talk of cobras and 800 series, but I don't see any numbers on mine. A local guy back home who has owned boats helped me the first round and the winterizing and oil stuff he was a big help on. We did however just take out the top and bottom screws of the lower unit to drain it. then we started pumping like crazy until it got up tothe upper dipstick. after reading on here, i see where I should be using the middle hole possibly as an indicator as to being full??

could someone please help with the proper procedure for my changing the lower unit oil?

next question, is on the other side of the outdrive, there is a squarish box of somesort with oil level or something on it. the guy b4 said just to leave it alone and not worry about it. 3rd season coming up and I want to know more.

This is the same for the oil plug up on the top side of the outdrive on the hull. what is this for??

how hard is it to lubricate the steering and throttle?? what else do i need to have done to keep me on the water. i'm thinking plugs, wires, and points this spring. should i be having anything else on the lower unit serviced??

i don't want to spend a ton as i jsut signed on a house, but do want to try to be sure and keep the boat for as long as i can. thanks in advance everone. you can also email me at"

spdrcr616@hotmail.com

if that would be easier. i have a couple pics of the out drive but not sure how to post.

Re: gen maint help

Sounds like you have a series 800 Stringer OMC outdrive.

The FIRST step to proper Maintenance it to get and OMC Manual.

Lower Gearcase just remove the drain and oil level plugs and let it drain but look for signs of water as it drains. Put new seals on the plugs. Screw the lub pump into the drain hole and slowly pump in Hi Vis Lube until it runs out the top level plug. Put the level plug in them remove the pump and install the drain plug.

Upper gear case remove the lower drain plug for the upper gear case and remove the upper plug with oil dipstick. Again fill slowly from the drain plug with HI VIS LUBE check the oil dip stick on the top of the outdrive. When get to the proper level screw in the upper dip stick / plug first then remove pump for the drain and install plug.

Intermediate Housing - Remove the level plug and the drain plug on the starboard side below the ball gears and let it drain. Again fill from the drain plug with HI VIS LUBE until you can see oil in the level plug. Install the top level plug then unscrew the fill pump for the drain and install the plug.

Tilt clutch (Squarish thing) remove the plug on the bottom and the level plug on the port side and let it drain. Fill with motor oil from the bottom plug until it runs out the top plug. Put the top oil level plug back in and then remove the bottom pump and insert bottom plug.

Grease all the zert fitting with OMC Triple Guard grease. Swivel Bearing thru small hole in front of the outdrive Just below the exhaust port. Steering shaft outboard on the starboard side of the intermediate housing near the ball gears. Steering shaft inboard in engine starboard side just in front of the steering cables. Tilt pins one on each side of the of the outdrive under the rubber bumper stop pads.

If you have select trim should lube the jackshaft at the front of the engine and the trim motor zert.

If you have power steering there are fitting and up course the power steering fluid. (dextron II).

I probably missed some but you need a manual.

Yep, sounds like an 800. COBRA's were introduced very late in '85. The easy way to tell is the COBRA uses two hydralic RAMs to trim and lower the drive (like Mercs). The 800 and 400 used the big quadrant gear.
