general engine question

hi everyone, i have an '81 johnson 35hp, electric start and choke, everything runs fine, have a question though, should the engine be charging the battery when it's running? or, like i do now, do i keep charging the battery whenever it gets low? i've always thought i had to charge the battery because this outboard doesn't charge the battery (ie - have an alternator or whatever to charge it), just curious, should the engine be charging the battery, or not? thanks

Yes indeed.<br /><br />Some motors came without charging ability when aimed at 100% manual users. No power for starting, lanterns or anything else.<br /><br />If your motor started out like this and somebody fitted the electric starter later, it could be an explanation. Are your absolutely sure there is no charging on it? Ought to be when it's electric starting.

Put a voltmeter on the battery terminals. When the motor is running, if it goes up to 14-15 volts, then it's charging.

My name is Wayne and I just acquired an old Johnson 3 hp seahorse motor from a friends wife as he recently passed away before I can get it running can anyone tell me what year it is the model number is JW-11 and the serial number is 1304474 so if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Your JW-11 is a 1955 model, takes a J6J plug gapped at .030, point gap is .020 and recommended fuel mix is 16:1. Please start a new post when you want to ask a question, makes it easier for us to find and answer everyone's questions.

recently ran out of fuel on my 9.9 yamaha 4 stroke, now she will idle for a bit and when i go to give it gas she will stall, does 9.9 yamaha have a elecrtic fuel pump? does anybody have any ideas for me??!!
