We need to build a box that is light, weather tight, secure, and fast to build. It does not need to last more than one winter in Ohio. Generally, we plan to get some 1/8th inch panel, and screw it together using 2x2s in the corners and stainless steel sheet rock screws. To seal it, we plan to use fiberglass boat repair tape on all the edges and then paint it down with resin, maybe even painting the entire box with the resin.

Do you have any suggestions as far as what kind of tape to use, and how hot to mix the resin? How many coats? We'd really appreciate any other helpful suggestions. I understand we can probably get the tape and resin at Walmart? Oh my gosh, I had no idea that they'd have it!

Welcome to iboats.

There is no such thing as mixing things hot....... fiberglass resin is always mixed by following the directions and you always have limited working time.

If you want it to last forget the sheetrock screws and use stainless steel........cover the entire box with fiberglass and CSM (chopped strand mat) because resin alone will crack and allow water in. Two or three layers should "almost" do it.

Fiberglass is really not as water tight as one thinks.

If you assemble the box using liquid nails, cover the box in a layer of csm and then a layer of cloth....... and one more layer of cloth...... it should outlive most of us.

Here is some of the best reading material I can recommend http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=234392

What is the box for?

Some time ago we built a console from styrofoam. simply hot glued the foam to the shape we wanted. Rounded the edges. Fiberglassed the outside using a lay-up schedule of mat. Flipped her upside down and poured some gasolene over the styrofoam which ate the foam up.

blueboard from HD works if you want the extra strength and keep the foam intact.
