115.

I alwayhs thought the 135-140 were a bit "stressed".

The 150 is an entirely different animal. Are you sure the boat is rated for 150?

150. I've never heard somebody say they wish they had less horses. Also, I'm with DJ on the 140. They run like beasts but they always seem kind of on the edge since they're squeezing all they can get out of that block.

I am partial to the 140s myself less weight than 150 and more get up and go than the 115. A properly setup 140 will run like scalded cat across the water when you really want to move. When cruising pull it back to 3/4 throttle and the fuel economy is decent.

i have a 115 on now friend has the same boat with the 140 i can leave him on take off then he will slowly catch me, his tops out around 4 mph more than mine but burns alot more fuel, for the 150 i dont know what i would gain because i do alot of trolling. there is a guy with the same boat as mine says he wish he hade never switched from the 115.

115. All of the others would probably overpower a 16' boat.

115, gas isn't getting cheaper on the long haul, and you will still get there in plenty of time:D

A 17.5ft boat should be rated for a 150, and thats what I would install. If its a bass boat the 115 & 140 will strain on this type hull when its fully loaded with 2 people,18 gallons of fuel, gear and 15 gallons of water in livewell. My 250 is slow out of the hole when its fully loaded (50 gal of fuel and 35 gallon in livewell & 28 pitch prop). You will also be able to run faster and at less throttle setting as the smaller engines would have to run more throttle to run same speed due to gear ratios and prop diameter/pitch.

Of course, we've all overlooked the "right" answer: Buy them all 3 and if you need to, pick up an extra hull or two while you're at it.

Where did he say his 17.5' boat is a BassRocket?? If it is, of course, you are correct; but if not those big engines could kill him.

Either the 115 or the 150. Depending on if you're on a budget for gas or not :) . Nothing wrong with more HP!!

As long as it is within the rating of the boat, okay. Otherwise what is wrong is that it can kill you.

Re: general question for everbody

My question would be what type of fishing/boating is being done? The type of boating needed to be incliuded in this question.

If the boat/motor is a fast ski or "Get There" fishing boat then the motor needs would be a lot different than if it was also used for trolling, or use a smaller trolling motor also.

Re: general question for everbody

The OP stated he does a lot of trolling and I think he answered his own question by stating that he currently has a 115 and he is happy with the performance of it. The 140s don't really like to troll and even the 150s were designed to move heavy bass boats from location to location at speed and then using a trolling motor while fishing. Based on his needs if I was him I would stick to the 115.

I have found that the 115 is a good proven motor. I would go with that one. Parts will probably be more reasonable too.
