What is the exact purpose of the generator on an old two stroke. I ask because i've been chasing why my boat will start but not idle and then I found the wire that should go to generator not hooked up and the voltage regulator is missing. Guess its time for some parts and time to take the flywheel off.

Re: generator

Time to tell us what exact motor you have, ndralle.

Generators always have only one purpose. . .to generate power to run lights and/or charge a battery.

Re: generator

It is a 1964 big twin 40 hp. Does the generator have anything to do with creating power so the points can create spark?

Re: generator

No. That engine uses a dual magneto for ignition. It is unlikely that the mags are causing it to not idle. More likely carb trouble or link 'n' synch is off.

Re: generator

I have a manual but it doesn't explain how to sync the engine very well. Do you know where I can get good directions on how to do it?
Thank you
