Genuine Mercury Shop Manual

I'm in need of a service manual for a '77 Merc 850.

I tried at www.biggerhammer.net they sort of say that they have them in pdf files available for viewing online or for download. However, when I attempt that, all I get is "cover.pdf" which is essentially the table of contents...that's all. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Yesterday; I met a fellow owner of my same engine. He has the manual; and I thought that I could scan the thing page by page, and then up-load it on this site or elsewhere for anyone who wants it. I don't know if anyone else has done this on any other engine; or whether this site would be interested in storing the file on it's server... It would seem to be invaluable for people like me searching for genuine factory manuals.

BTW..I've looked at the Clymer books...and one by Intertec....couple of others...they attempt to cover sixteen different engines at once..and only a few pages actually apply to my engine. A waste of money IMHO.

You comments on all of the above will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chuck

PS....if someone has already scanned the original factory manual for a Merc 850 nd has it available on-line somewhere...I could save myself a lot of scanning. Let me know; OK?

Re: Genuine Mercury Shop Manual

When you get to that stage of the cover, you should be able to click on whatever section you want to look at and it will pop up. I have used it many times, but was able to purchase one for my engine on E-Bay. I guess I lucked out but had to outbid another determined buyer.

You need to download the latest version of Adobe's Reader. I had the same problem and had to update. Good Luck.

Dave ..

Buying one on e-bay or purchasing one from MaxRules is fine...but I'm talking about a site that has it available for free.

I will have access to the manual and would be willing to scan and do the upload. If everyone who has a shop manual for their particular engine could do this, this site would be an invaluable resource for people to get the proper information for their engine; especially the older hard to find ones.

Is there an iboats exec that I can correspond with to discuss getting this to happen?

Thanks again, Chuck

Yes Snapper et al... I did get that far....but they don't have the exact manual for my engine.

I still think that my offer to help start an on line pdf library of numerous engine manuals here on iboats should have some merit.

Thanks for all your input. Chuck

The manufacturer of the equipment/manual will have a fit. Manuals usually have copy right protection.

I wondered about that myself red_neck. How do you suppose bighammer.net can do it. Maybe they pay a fee?

Dave..

I have periodically seen the 74-78 Mercury Shop Manual on CD for sale on eBay. Usually ends up selling for under $20. This is a "homemade" scanned version as you describe. I imagine copyright issues might prevent putting such a thing online but I don't know.

Re: Genuine Mercury Shop Manual

Hhhhmmmpppfff!

This is getting frustrating. I sure would like to find the genuine Mercury shop manual for my 1977 85...serial #04721196.

To help in my search on e-bay, could someone tell me the correct part number or post a picture of what it's supposed to look like.

Will it cover just the 85...or will it be like the Clymer book that talks about several engines?

Does someone here on iboats have one on CD that I could get a copy of at a reasonable price?

Thanks for reading, Chuck

Re: Genuine Mercury Shop Manual

Hi Ernie,

Yes; they do have one heck of a lot of firearm manuals; don't they? I wonder just who runs biggerhammer?

Anyway...the manuals are here

http://www.biggerhammer.net/mercury/factory_manuals/Service_Manual_Index.html

Also...look at this page that precedes it...

http://www.biggerhammer.net/mercury/factory_manuals/Service_Manual_Index.html

A lot of information is there...and whoever scanned the manuals did a great job...it looks like they came from the manufacturer...

Unfortunately for me...they don't go back far enough for my engine. Mine is a 1977 85 HP.

I suppose that there may be a lot of similarities...but I'd sure like to fine the correct manual.

Thanks for reading, Chuck

P.S. I almost forgot Wildeone...I have had no luck at Parts Express....I enter in my serial number and it comes back "not found"...it seems that their inventory does not go back to an engine as old as mine. I could be wrong; but I don't see any way of ordering a manual from them.

Re: Genuine Mercury Shop Manual

Well...looks like bh357 has found one on Parts Express! Thanks!

I've seen that manual before on-line...I hesitated ordering it because; like the Clymer and Seloc ones...it seems to cover a plethora of models...

Didn't Mercury have a manual specific for one engine?

And, wasn't there a seperate manual furnished to the dealer as opposed to another version made available to the public?

Thanks so much for the response guys!

Now...if only I could find a used one out there at less $$$$$..............anybody???????????????

Chuck
