I've always had good luck with "Naval Jelly". It's gentle enough to just pour into your hand and smear it on the stain wait 5 minutes and just hose it off.

I agree with Crabby Captain John. Muriatic acid will take off rust stains, quickly and easily too. I have no idea if it will damage gel coat, but I've used it to remove rust and barnacles, and it has been a miracle product for me. And it is cheap! Any hardware store sells it.

I've used Rust Remover for this and it works. The key to removing tough stains in FG is acid- oxalic or muriatic. I think you'll find that the rust removers contain oxalic acid as the primary active ingredient.

Oxalic acid is about the best thing to use and it's less dangerous than muriatic acid.

There is this chemical called Citric Acid made in Florida and it works very well and it is 100% bio friendly and safe in the water or on any household use too. The only down side to it is that its like 100 bucks for a half a gallon or so and is very hard to find. But it works very well. Will bring back the meaning NEW to your boat. I use it all the time after my charter trips. You could also try Spray Nine it can be found on amazon and i heard some pretty good things about them. Good luck :)

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll try out a few methods on my next trip down to the lake and let you know.

I can say with confidence that Muriatic Acid is not a maybe. It is a guarantee. And, you don't need any elbow grease with it. There is no work involved at all. Rub some on, the acid does the job, rinse it off. Rust stains are gone.

I found this on youtube. He doesn't apply it until around the 5 minute mark, and he is using it for water stains, not rust. But, you can still see the ease of using it and how effective it is.

You need to apply wax where the muriatic acid worked as it will also be removed. If it does not come off with cleanser lightly brushed I bring out the muriatic!

So do you want to fool around with a bunch of mabe's or just get to it with something that is guarenteed to take it off .

People seem to hate on the Magic Erasers and I'm not quite sure why. I've used them successfully for all kinds of things on the interior and never had a problem. I've read that they damage the vinyl, but I figure it can't be as bad as what I'm trying to scrub off.

You do realize that Muriatic Acid is another name for hydrochloric acid!!! Hmmmm. I'll pass on that little tidbit thanks.
I'm waiting for somebody to recommend the blowtorch method or if that fails a little Semtex..

I'm just saying that it works. I had a spot on my swim platform where a wrench had been left on it and badly rusted. You could see the full outline of the wrench in the fiberglass/gelcoat, and it was bad.. real dark orange haha. And, to top that off, it was in the non-skid. No way a magic eraser (which I think is just real fine sandpaper) would take it off. The acid had it off, seriously, in seconds.
