Getting a homemade boat rated for motor HP

What are the steps for getting a boat certified for a horsepower rating? I have found several reads on the internet but none that really clear it all up for me. I emailed the USCG but they have not responded. I am building a small pontoon boat and would like to have the option of having a gas motor on it.
Thanks
Ben

I don't think you need Any kind of Ratings,.....
As long as you're Not a Manufacturer, or doing Commercial Work........

Go to whoever licenses boats in your state. Here in Pa it is the Fish and Game commission. They have a special form you fill out showing the sizes of the boat Length, width, transom height, bottom type, etc. and they issue a placad (similar to Coast Guard cert.) stating max persons, max load, and max horsepower. And here in Pa, every boat MUST have this placard--either as original equipment attached by manufacturer or as retrofit attached by owner. And yes, Fish and Game officers do check for them, and issue expensive citations.

Well how big is it? How much motor? You should not get in any trouble if it is a homebrew unless it is just flat out unsafe!

Well I have not built the craft yet it will be about 4.5' wide by 7' long on two pontoons. I was curious if there was soomething I needed to do to meet whatever guidelines there might be. I think the BMV takes care of all the liscensing here in Indiana

Re: Getting a homemade boat rated for motor HP

Well maybe this answer's my question.
Can I use a bigger motor on my boat than what it's rated for?
It is not a violation of Coast Guard regulations to install or use an engine larger than specified on the capacity label, but there may be state regulations prohibiting it, and restrictions from your own insurance company regarding this.
There are no Coast Guard regulations against exceeding the safe loading capacity, however, there may be State regulations or restrictions from your insurance company which prohibit this. There is a Coast Guard regulation that gives Coast Guard Boarding Officers the power to terminate the use of a boat (send it back to shore) if, in the judgment of the Boarding Officer, the boat is overloaded. There is no fine for this, unless the operator refuses the Boarding Officer's order. We certainly hope that you will abide by the rating, as overloading may lead to capsizing or swamping of the boat.

NOTE: The Coast Guard Capacity Information label is required only on monohull boats less than 20' in length. The label is not required on multi-hull boats, pontoon boats (catamarans), or on any sailboats, canoes, kayaks, or inflatable boats, regardless of length.

trying to insure and collect on a overpowered boat, won't happen. the insurance company will say the operator did not use 'do care' and operating an 'unsafe boat.'

Daivd@custommarinelabels.com makes the vinyl labels, you just stick it near the helm, or on the transom. just tell him what you need, max.hp , max persons, max weight. usually less than $10.00. i've used him several times and am well pleased. it meets the requirements.

In WA, under 16 feet and under 10hp needs no regs whatsoever Your DMV should have a Registration pamphlet
