I'm takin' her to the marina next week. I just don't have the resources to figure this one out (test wheel, tank, patience, experience). I checked out the warning horn, it works. I'll be having the marina test the temp senders and low/no oil senders for me also. I'm basically getting the whole motor checked out and documented for piece of mind for myself and whomever buys the boat. I'll post up whatever they come up with if anyone is following this...

She's been run in the test tank with a test wheel for a couple of hours. Stumbled once but kept running and then later died while the Mech stepped out to take a phone call. By the time he got back it had sat for a few minutes and was able to start again. The temp. is good, water pressure good, timing good, compression 110,110,110,105(on #4).

I asked them to run it another hour and pay closer attention this time emphasising that once it dies they have five minutes or less to trouble shoot the damn thing.

I'm also having them replace the stainless hoseclamps on the thermostat hoses and the cable ties on the fuel/oil pump with the proper clamps.

Could be a faulty powerpack. Sometimes these can fail when they get warm. You could try heating it up with a hairdryer or hot air gun to see if you can cause the problem to occur. I presume you are getting no spark at all when this happens.

That is an excellent idea! Thankyou very much, I will pass that on to the marina this morning or tow her home and do it myself. The Mech I talked to said it could be powerpack or flywheel but he didn't want to start selling me parts and not fix the problem. I'll call them this morning, also going to ask whether they're running with the hood on or off. That could make a difference.

Talked to the shop today, they got it to die and found the powerpack to be at fault. I'm getting a new one and I'll probably be on the water again Tuesday.
