That 400S is listed as a 1961 model---But I do not believe they were offered in RED.----So you might have a mix / match / custom model here.

I'd put in fresh gear oil. Also make sure you start it in water or you'll wreck the water pump.

Yeah I do not believe the finish is original, heck it was offered for sale as 59 Mark 58.

Many white mercury motors were painted black to make them look newer.---But in this case it looks like someone went the other way to make it look older or to match an older period look boat.

Yea it's been painted for sure. Hints the new mercury logs. That's one sharp looking outboard man.

These motors are well built , very simple to operate and maintain.---If you do not know now , it would be a good idea to learn how to maintain the magneto.---Cleaning and adjusting the points is key to an easy starting , smooth running machine.
