I am tyring to learn how to do this so that I can change the impeller. Took out the 4 bolt/screws (2 on each side) on the bottom side of the motor. Nothing budging. Is there another screw that I take out? Do I mess with the gearcase trim tab at all and that screw?

the shift rod connection is back under the bottom carb. there are 2 bolts under the trim tab. disconnect shift rod first. DO NOT turn it.

Looking at the gearcase diagram, it looks like there are more than FOUR bolts to remove. You need to remove the trim tab ... plus there is likely another bolt hidden under the trim tab!

Got the bolts out and dropped about an inch. Looked under the bottom carb and could not find where the shift rod attaches. Saw a cotter pin attached to a hortizontal rod and pulled it. Nothing.

My manual warns that if there is a hidden bolt under the trim tab that is not removed before all the other bolts, "irreparable damage could be done to the lower gearcase". Make sure you remove the trim tab and remove the bolt under the trim tab first!

Ahhh ... there is some purpose in the statement ... "if all else fails, read the instructions!"

does a '96 88hp spl require these same steps? i.e. am i looking for a shift rod bolt to disconnect also? If so I am having the same problem.
