I have just cleaned and put new kits in the carbs of my 1999 Johnson 90hp. I want to empty the old fuel( about two years old) from the onboard fuel tank. I have used the primer bulb to start it to siphon, but have not been sucessful. Any ideas would help.
It has been suggested that when I get as much of the old gas out as I can, I put a can of stabilizer and then fill with a higher octane.... what do you think????
Thanks for your help.

Hi Woody!

You will need to buy a siphon hose from an auto supply or where ever. Get all the old fuel out you possibly can.

87 octane is all you should use for your motor. And ofcourse 2cycle oil. You can use stablizer if you wish, but if your going to be useing you boat much at all then I wouldnt think it would be nessary. suite your self tho.

Siphoning needs several factors to work well.

1. Unkinked hose, obviously.
2. Outlet end lower than inlet end (the lower the better).
3. A route that keeps the entire hose as close to the liquid's surface as possible. This means that if you're siphoning out of a bilge tank, routing the hose over the gunwales of the boat, then you could have difficulty. Try running the hose through the transom plug hole if possible - this keeps it about as low as you can get.

That suggestion about filling the tank with fresh fuel (not premium - 87 octane) once you've drained all you can is sensible. Beware water in the tank - it sits under the gas, and will be the last stuff to get siphoned out.

I just did the same thing to my boat. For most of the fuel it just siphoned out of the normal fuel line with the bulb.
To get the last bit out, I removed the 2" filler tube. From there I could look right into the tank. I then used a suction device, like a backwards grease gun and sucked every drop out of the tank.
