Pushed it.

I had a beer -- gives a driver confidence, you know. Then I strapped on my big dummy orange life preserver. Was a bit choppy, but I creeped around while the motor warmed up -- then pushed it down hard. Popped up in 8 seconds and was going 39 by gps in about 30 seconds. Fuel cell was in front and I was in center.

Trouble: motor had some clatter. Even with more oil in fuel. Could be a valve out of adjustment. I think that I need to take it to a pro. I have done all I know that I can do with competence. Time to pay somebody for their higher level of prowess.

thanks again for all the help from all over.

keep to mixing at 24:1 though.

better oils you say? well good then 24:1 will be even a better mix:D doesnt mean the motor has changed one bit to scavenging for 50:1 oil mix. made to run with 24:1

40mph!! that's fast for a 35hp.:D

Yes, Sir. Was nice to see a 52 year old boat and motor get going. I felt bad about the clatering though - it's not a terrible sound, but it's there. Appintment with the doctor on Tuesday -- guess it's boating season, so you have to wait a week to get in.

there are no valves in a 2 stroke to adjust ,thats the beauty of them!if some mechanic tells you they have to adjust the valves, run and run fast!maybe your not totally familar with 2 strokes per your previous post or maybe it was just a slip but it doesnt hurt atall to read about the theory of 2 stroke operation, it will give you a much better understanding of outboard motor operations and maybe the confidence to work on it yourself.

Yep. Sorry about the rookie mistake! I am used to working on 4 strokes, but I know that the piston IS the valve.

So what could be the knock? I have heard that old 2 strokes tend to sound like there is a marble rolling around inside, but this is too much for "normal". What is the usual cause of clatter in a 2?

I'm gonna post the ? on a seperate thread. Thanks, again, to all!

do you have a pull start on the motor? my 1958 35 horse had a rattle, if i recall it was something in the pull start system rattling due to engine vibration.

I am more interested in the last time that old outboard was ran. You must make darn sure that she is getting cooling water!!!! Otherwise it will overheat and ruin the powerhead.

Before you put it in the water again, test it on a garden hose. At idle, you should see water coming out of the exhaust. I wouldn't rev it up over idle. The head should feel warm to the touch. You should be able to keep your hand on it for about 15 to 20 seconds.

One thing about the hose test... If your impeller is 100% shot, completely gone, you will still get water out the tell-tale when connected to a hose. Its being forced through by hose pressure.

But... It WILL tell you if a family of spiders is now taking up residence in all the cooling passageways.

Are you sure it's in the powerhead?

Re: Getting on Plane - scared to push it!

1. It does have a pull start, but that is not noisy. It has a strange mechanism that causes a valve to be opened to lower compression while pulling the cord. Not noisy when running.

2. Has NEW impellor.

3. Not really certain where the noise is from. Seems high, but when ripping through the water at 30 + in a 12 footer, it's hard to lean down and listen / inspect things.

I took it to an old guy here in town who has a repair shop. Will let you know what he says.

yes it is a compression release for when pull starting. its hard to start the big boys with the release, imagine without having a release...
