Re: getting ready for winter

We don?t have near the cold weather you folks in VA have and if it gets cold enough to freeze an engine, we prefer a warm fire and two fingers of a good pusser's rum. However, we have seen a couple of ways to keep the engine safe. (The assumption is yours is not a closed cooling system, in which one could simply add antifreeze.) One method we have seen involves installing an inline thermo-heater in the cooling systems that uses a simple 110v power supply. Another more basic approach is to place a light in the engine well, usually a 100w, to generate heat. The same fellow that uses the light in the engine also places a lamp with a reflective shade placed close to the outdrive to keep it warm. As the saying goes ? ?Necessity is the mother of invention?!!

Re: getting ready for winter

The night I bought my boat with 4.3 merc I/O was freezing and snowing heavily. I had just run the motor and had to drain it. I didn't trust that a bulb would keep it from freezing. I pulled manifold the hoses, water pump hose, power steering cooler and block drains in about half an hour in the dark with the snow whipping around. I can now do it in less than 10 minutes in good conditions. I plan to use my boat this winter fishing feeder spring salmon and will have to drain it each time. I would say drain it completely and you won't have to worry.
