Getting rid of bees from house

Last year my mother in law had a nest of bees in a over hanging porch like thing around the up stairs bed rooms. Tried several things that didn't work. Including those bee traps you buy at lowes. (caught 1 bee) with it.<br />What did work were mouse pads! Stapeled up mouse pads (the sticky kind meant to catch mice) all around the entrance of where they go in and out.<br />They turned black with bees and after a long while the bees left. (Two weeks or so)<br /><br />Well they are back again on the other side of the house this year!<br />I could do the mouse pad thing but would like something easier and quicker. <br />I can see and reach where they are going inside the wall (this time vrs the over hang last time)<br /><br />Was thinking of wasp or bee spray and dumping the whole can into the hole but the chances of getting stung that way seem a bit high.<br /><br />Any thoughts on the subject??

Are they honey bees or yellowjackets? Either way, I suit up in my trusty bee suit early in the morning, fire up my trusty gassing machine, stick the tip in the hole, and gas their brains out. If you don't have $1400 to spend on a gassing machine, you may want to call a pro. They'll have it dead and gone in no time, and you don't have to be the one getting stung. There are also dusts that can be applied through the entrance hole that work, but dusts can take time, and consumers can't buy the stuff that works good.<br /><br />I know, I know, I am an exterminator so of course I am going to say call a pro, but it never fails to amaze me how many people get seriously injured just to save a buck. We charge $75 to do it, and that includes spraying the entire house afterwards to help prevent it from happening again. I think it is worth it to keep from getting stung up to just pay to get it done.<br /><br />Open your phonebook and call some places, then go from there....

Boy ! I just knew that one day I would have the chance to relate my experiences with a wild bee hive/nest. Had a whopper of a bee nest under the foundation of my garage. I tried packing dirt into the opening, thinking , Yup, that's that, the little ba$tards will die. Boy, was I wrong. Within hours they had dug themselves out. <br /><br />Then I got a brain storm. I grabbed the shop-vac. Wired the hose with the crevis attachment, with the tip very close to the opening. As the bees came or left the nest, they were sucked up. I left the vac running until well after sundown. I shut off the vac, plugged up the hose and left the shop vac in the sun. The bees transpired in no time. I was amazed at how many bees I found in the vac when I emptied it out.

My favorite way is to go out at night when they are all in the nest armed with 2 cans of brake cleaner. As you approach the 10’ range let loose on the nest and drench it. I usually spray one at the hole in the bottom to kill any that try to escape and the other at the top so it will soak in to the nest. The brake cleaner kills them on contact, so once you start spraying the nest don’t stop until the nest is soaking wet. After you have finished spraying it leave it alone until the next day and make sure you got them all. Then you can remove the nest. The other option is to make a potatoes canon and shoot it down.. lol but you won’t kill them all that way.

I use Vox's method on wasps...<br />Was spray - $4 a can<br /><br />Brake Clean, $1.50<br />Armed with 2 cans, I go in.<br /><br />The petroleum coats their wings and they suffocate very quickly.<br /><br />Large nest type creatures, like hornets, I leave those for a pro.

They liked to dive bomb us and sting us on our heads when we went out the back door. <br />July 2001 I tore the old roof off and we could see the nests. So we waited until dark when they had settled in and my wife went up on the roof armed with a can of wasp spray and me on the ground with the same. I turned a spot light on them placed about 20 feet away from me and on the count of 3 we both sprayed the nests... the few bees that made it out headed straight for the spot light! Kind of crude but it worked and no more bees!<br /><br />I liked the shop vac idea <br />Jason:<br />I called several places this morning and the average price here on the Left Coast is $150.00 with no spraying of the house. Ouch! <br />Mum in law has grand kids staying with her for a couple weeks and doesn't want any chemicals sprayed while they are there so I'm off to put mouse pads up again <br />After the kids leave if the bees are still around she said it would be ok to call in the Pros..<br /><br />I printed out your reply and gave it to her this morning after calling to get prices.<br /><br />Don't even ask about carpenter ants.. one company quoted 4-$6000.00 depending on the situation and a 100-250 dollar a month fee to keep them away! <br />That was the extreme high end<br /><br />Most were 425-500 to drill holes and spray inside the walls and another 4-500 to spray a 30ft area around the house.<br /><br />On the bright side my mother in law told me this morning that since we sealed her chimney and sky lights she has had no ants for the last two years. Good lord, those prices are horrible! No wonder the out-of-towners write us a check without blinking. For Carpenter Ants we charge $295 for the first 1000 square feet of living space in the home, and $100 per 1000 square feet after that. The treatment includes locate/kill colony, inject wallvoids, treat baseboards, treat entire crawlspace, treat entire exterior top to bottom, and destroy colonies near home. Ants come back, we come back, free of charge (they rarely come back). No monthly jazz, we warrant the job for 1 year, and renew the warranty with follow-up treatment annually for $115. Maybe we need to do some price hiking. Now weeds, we charge $85 minimum, $85 per acre after that, and difficulty raises price as well. The people with pain in the arse landscaping pay more than those who keep it clean and simple.

If they are honey bees, find someone that "keeps" bees and they will often come and remove the bees. I have done it back when I kept bees, just to get the bees! if they are not honey bees well, have fun with the (which ever choice you make here)!
