Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Ugh what a rough day.I hate gel coat. I went in this morning with the goal of removing the seats and fully sanding all the gelcoat off. . 10 hours later I am done. Grinder hit my finger and that is a nice wound . Arthritis and tendonitis is kicking my but right now.. Two pain killers and some liquer will hopefully dull some of the pain. I am just glad I am done with the gel coast sanding.

Next is to scuff up some areas. Build a jig , Cut her in half , build a metal mold , then glass her .

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

So now she is about ready for glass, but I am having a dilemma . Should I add a tunnel about 5' long . I am being told it will navigate the boat better or should I leave her flat and just add an outside stringer ?

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

hmmm
how to do a tunnel'd hull for a 1 off stretched & widened Gheenoe......................... yeah, no idea.............

But won't that affect the interior of the hull, raising it even further into an are already short gunwale height boat. It will have little FREEBOARD, the amount of gunwale (height) that extends from the plane of the water to the top of the gunwale, often measured static (not underway) & underway)....

Or at least that's the way I understand it for boats that aren't built w/ an outer hull & an inner raised/supported deck (floor, like a typical runabout)..

i guess you mean the tunnel will make the now larger surface area boat hull, that in theory should draft shallower, TRACK better. Rather then get blown sideways & off course since it is so much further from the 'steering' at the rear to the bow, that will likely ride much higher w/out sufficiently distributed weight, also guessing that the new & improved Gheenoe will get a larger motor to push the larger boat....... The motor's & captain's weight will be much further from the center of buoyancy since the hulls been stretched......

I also suspect that Exterior CHINES, CHINE LOGS (but on your shaped hull, not really chine logs) or a KEEL are the 'outside stringers' you're referring to. Those would be a solution, but again as a 1 off, custom, stretched & widened GHEENOE: How many chines, how long & tall should they be & where are they located fore & aft along the hull's bottom?

I can only guess, but a 3/4+ length keel along the centerline of the hull bottom, from the transom forward, @1.5" tall and 3/4-1" wide, may be sufficient. If not, add 2 chines to either side of the hull halfway from the keel to the start of the rounded edge of the hull as it transitions from bottom to gunwale. From your mockup photo above, it looks like that might be about where the transom corners are now, 1/2way between the keel & the curved edge. Run them about 3/4+ the length of the hull along that 1/2way length, also starting at the transom. They should be PARALLEL to the keel..................... If there is any curvature of the hull bottom as it goes from mid-ship's to the stern, the keel should get 'taller' as the hull rises, so as to keep an even, flat, straight plane along the bottom edge of the keel...

Hey, ya know: keep an even keel.............

The keel alone, or the additional chines, would make the hull track better and drift less then w/ out them.....

If you epoxy them in place, small aluminum angles set along similar lines as described above, might be more robust & last longer then a polyester resin & glass wrapped wooden keel or chine. You have some skills w/ fiberglassing & fabrication, I suspect a V shaped keel molded in glass & resin wouldn't be to difficult for you to mold & fill w/ PB & adhere it to the hull, a slight keel, would be better then none.

But I've never stretched or widened a Gheenoe, let alone both. Nor attempted to fabricate a tunnel hull.... I think the tunnel would greatly over create the necessary chine/keel tracking effect I think you are attempting. And with no camber to the hull, where does the tunnel start & stop fore & aft? The tunnel might create a stiffer hull, which would probably be a nice add to the stretched & widened hull...... A slightly curved piece of plywood is significantly more rigid then a flat piece, particularly when it's a complex curve, like the contours generated by the hull's shape for my plywood boat. Which uses a keel & chine setup similar to what I've described above........

Went in today and glassed her. Thanks to my fiance for helping with the mixing.

... and then it wasn't the cute little skinny boat you used to love, kinda reminds me of a couple of ex-girl friends.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Spent some time on her today. Removed the mold and started scuffing her up with some 40 grit. I am getting better at this. No big air spots at all this time. Had one spot that was uneven and grounded it down quite a bit. I will build it up on the inside. I even sat in the middle by the missing transom . Wow is the new glass stronger . Next is to start scuffing the inside for stringers and bulk heads. Ugh lol :)

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

I bought some Nida core for the stringers. I was told when I want to glass it to lay up my resin and wait till tacky. Then lay my glass. Is the correct way ? Kind of nervous with this stuff.

Work has been kicking my but so I haven't had much time till this weekend . Raising the outside edges 4'' higher. Finished the outside layer. Next is to scuff the inside and do an inside layer up .

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Coming right along.....Keep up the good work. Are you posting your progress on the customgheenoe.com forum? I'm sure they'd love to see what you're doing. There is supposedly an 18' factory Gheenoe being made, but it's Top Secret, or something. Only Harley Gheen (company owner) and his son have one. Supposedly they'll be rated for +75hp!!!

EDIT:
Here's a link to a vid of the mystery 18 footer. I guess it's not so Top Secret after all :) (I wish it had a better paint job/gelcoat)

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

They are for sale now. Pugher, Harley's son told me there are only around 6 in existence . I think the price scares a lot off from buying one.

They have another surprise in the future , but I won't let that out to the public since I was told the news in private.

My boat is longer, wider, and taller then the 18' though .

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

.......oh, the plot thickens :) Glad they're doing well enough to branch out into new markets, but that's no fair teasing :) Can't wait to see what the new model is going to be. Always good to see a local/regional guy doing well. I hope he can give the big boys a run for their money. There seems to be a bit of a Renaissance in local FL inshore/skiff builders with companies like ECC, Ankona, Gheenoe, etc... doing well even in tough economic times. Their boats are starting to pop up outside of Florida in Texas, the West coast and even inland places like Idaho/Montana where the trout/carp fly guys use FL-style poling skiffs. Me likey. Keep us posted on your progress. What kind of motor are you going to put on her?

4-stroke vs. 2-stroke? Is there a particular brand of motor you like? My neighbor has a Yami and loves it, but I'd love to get an ETEC one day.

I'd rather have a 2 stroke , but not many new ones on the market now a days . :( . Looking at a Honda atm . Lowest weight on a 4 stroke 70 hp I've found as of yet .

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

etec are 2-stroke motors and run as clean as most 4-strokes. much lighter too. a little pricey up front, but no break-in period and no maintenance for 3 yrs/300 hrs.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Just got home from a long day. Scuffed the rear and started the transom. 3 layers thick . Now to wait for her to cure and start scuffing again. Next will be the wood and elbow, then stringers.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Worked 5 a.m till 5 p.m today then 5pm till 10;30 pm on the boat. Grinded the transom and forward 24'' and then center for stringer. Tomorrow I will grind the other 2 stringer spots and if I have time start cutting my wood for the transom and stringers.
