Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Another long day at work then to the boat. Just got home and beat.
I sanded both sides on the bottom for the other 2 stringers.

cut and married the transom pieces together.

Next is to cut the stringers and get ready to glass.....

You're working like a beast sideshow. Hopefully, the grinding will be done soon. Hang in there!

Went in and set the transom in. I had some small gaps so I made some 1 and a 1/4 chop strand filler and filled it in.

Used screws to make it nice and tight to the back half.

Next . To sand and get stringers ready . I want to glass the transom and stringers together for a better strengthening bond.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Finally glassed in the stringers and I'm beat. Took about 6 hours to do.

The good. The floor and sides laid down perfect.

Bad news. The top cap piece wouldn't lay down for crap. Air bubbles everywhere on the top.

Question and I know the answer most likely. Do I need to sand down the whole top and just reglass it over the sides ?

This sucks , but I think it has to be done :( .

air bubble :(

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Look s like you've made a ton of progress on the stringers overall. I wish I knew the answer to your air bubble question, but it sounds like you're probably right. Is there a way to inject resin into the voids, then sand it flush or something? This is why I stick to tinnies. You can smack 'em with a hammer to fix almost anything. Hang in there! She'll be one of a kind when she's done. Keep us posted.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Thanks.

I talked to a local boat builder and he is telling me to grind off the top , put resin on it and leave it. He is telling me the strength comes from the hull and sides and the top doesn't matter , but to get rid of the glass and bubbles on top.

Can anyone confirm this ? If so that will be nice lol .

Yep

as long as the top of the stringer NEVER sees any water, leaving the stringer top bare will be just fine

condensation below deck, water below deck, leaks from above deck thru to below deck...

What are you using for the deck?

Decks will be Nidacore. I will be putting them down with a filler on sides and glassing them up a few inches on the sides.

Have you bought the NidaCore yet? Don't need much, but if its a 3M product it may not be restocked where ever you plan to buy it.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

I have 1 board for now to start the bulk heads. I will be needing a lot more down the road. I plan on flat decking the front and read with a lower deck in the middle. Maybe a center console .

NLA= No Longer Available

As zool mentions, an industry insider said 3M pulled the plug on ALL their core products, effective immediately, production is to cease, may have already.

So yep, if it's on the shelf & you want/need it, ya better buy it while you can..

Ok thanks for the info.

Since I'm going to sand the top off I'm guessing I should hit the sides too and just try to recap it.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Probably easier in the end. I just read a thread on another site that was griping about how out of square Gheenoes tend to be. Their transom looked more like a parallelogram than a square. While they are neat little boats, they are mass produced with chopper guns so the fit and finish isn't always the greatest.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

They are out of square big time. WHen I did the extension I made sure the floor was perfectly square front to back. Glassed in she still is square........ on the inside. Outside ended up being 1/4 '' out of square. I leveled the top and it was 1/2'' out of square. The hard part for me is I'm building it up and trying to square off an unsquare craft lol.

I still love this boat .

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Well if it makes you feel any better, it's definitely the boat and not you. I must've been driving you crazy, but it also shows there's a lot of room for error in those hulls. Kinda like good ol' pick up. Not the best fit and finish, but they'll go any where, run forever and look pretty cool while doing so. Don't drive yourself crazy with the measurements. The Gheenoe police aren't going to come after you :) Heck, I bet Pugar would get a kick out of it if/when he sees it. His little boats have come along way from the hot rod canoes they started out as.

Re: Gheenoe stretch and widening

Pugar and family know and love it. I have met them in person and they now know me by face now because of this project lol . No one has ever done this to a gheenoe nor tried to a project like this the right way . Pugar has dropped some knowledge on me and has helped me with questions. I aim to make the baddest custom gheenoe ever made. It already will be the biggest lol .
