Re: gilligans island

So it was a poor weather briefing and lack of a float plan that was their downfall.
Mary Ann was hotter than Ginger, BTW...

If you don't know much about charts, then it would be a good idea to take a class with the US Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary. They have safe boating classes and navigation classes. A newer class called "Weekend Navigator" is great because it teaches you how to read charts but also teaches you all the good stuff that's in a GPS device. Unless you're boating on small lakes, the ability to read charts is a must. Just google US Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary for your state and you'll find a flotilla nearby that is holding classes.

75 degrees tomorrow.
I just need to get a motor in the SeaRay and we could be on the water.

Just here to help "boats3po" with the charts.
I used to read charts for a living.

Re: gilligans island

Reading a chart is much like reading a map, the lines of contour indicate a rise of the floor much like the contour levels of a topographic map
(elevations in feet mean sea level, north american datum 1927 transverse mercator projection)
but kinda of backwards.
(I should be looking at a chart map but only have a topo open)
While the height of water should remains constant, "BUT" due to tides and or spring run off if your in fresh water, it is up and down.
Pick up a book and do some studying is my suggestion.

Re: gilligans island

You can start here with NOAA's Chart #1, which is the legend for all charts; U.S. Chart #1

And then you can go here - NOAA Nautical Chart Viewer for the online charts of your area to look at and get a feel for them. Like rbh said, they are very much like reading a road map.

I've noticed that sometimes the links don't always work. If you get an error, just reload.

Oh, and without a doubt, Maryann all the way!!! :D
