Hey guys since my engine is out could i knock the gimbal bearing out from the bilge area instead of using a puller from the outdrive side . Does having the engine out make removing the gimbal bearing that much easier in your guys opinion ?

About 1,000 times easier.
Just get inside bilge and use a big drift or a length of pipe and wail away on it with a BFH.

Do just as bomar76 said. Just popped out one tonite. It was pretty well rusted & took a few whacks. Now a new one is in as well as the coupler
remember to line up the grease hole & install cut outs facing out. Good luck

The cutouts go inward... And be carefull when knocking them out from the backside bc you will damage the seal (if you arent replacing it) Some like to use the axle bearing pullers but they will damage the seal as well ....

Kind of insane to not replace the seal when it is that easy to do.

And it's not like it's a $400 part.

There is a seal behind the gimble bearing ... It doesnt have to be replaced with every bearing change... If needed replace or if you just want to do it...

thanks didnt know ..im a first timer... As was ilooking from the engine bay today and trying to determine what exactly im trying knock out. looking from the outdrive its fairly simple to understand the the gimbal bearing but from inside i need to make sure im going after the correct piece I dont want to try and bang out an immoveable part. anyone have a pic .ill post a pic this weekend and draw an arrow.

Re: Gimbal Bearing change with engine out

im back in the bilge looking at the bearing : it looks like there is a black casing in front of the bearing ,i guess that s the seal --The only way i can knock that bearing out looks like with a screwdriver and hammer.( i really think thats not going to work)... aside from getting a puller. I dont want to ruin anything in there . What do guys think obviously the manual only shows from the stern and the puller. What should i do? I guess im going to pull it with a rear axle tool puller
