I have a 1977 chris craft lancer
350 marine power engine
280 volvo drive.
I have loud grinding at idle speeds. Gets worse when i turn steering wheel.
Is it the gimbal or u joints making the noise or both? it got real loud this past week.

There is no gimbal bearing in your drive

Its either the PDS bearings or the U-joints

You are pulling the drive annually for inspection/maintenance, correct?

Never pulled, have only had it 3 months. What are pds bearings?
there are/is bearing(s) on the driveshaft between the engine coupler and drive input shaft, some can be replaced from the outside (drive removed). others require removing the engine to access the forward bearing (if equipped)

u joints and input shaft assy can be accessed by removing the top most portion/gearbox on the drive

Sounds expensive to have replaced.

read this on your PDS shaft and how to change the bearings

read this on pulling the engine and aligning it:

get the manual on pulling the drive and replacing the u-joints and input shaft. you will not only need the factory manual, you will need special tools.

only the 4-cylinders can be removed from the outside. V6's and V8's require the motor to come out

This job is not as hard as it appears. With the upper gear housing and bellows removed straighten the tabs over the 6 bolts. Disconnect the same things you would do to pull an engine from a car. Remove the 6 bolts and the whole PDS housing comes out with the engine. The bearings and seals can be acquired at any bearing supply house. The universal joints are automotive and can be matched up anywhere. A good pair of snap ring pliers is about the only special tool you will need. A 7mm 1/4” drive socket fits the clamps and is easier than a screwdriver.
Sierra # 18-2775 molded hose
18-2778 hose connection
18-2597 upper “O” ring kit
18-2744 drive shaft bellows
These parts should also be changed at the same time.
With the service manual you should be able to do this.

Thanks for the info but there is no way i could ever do any of that. I dont even have a place i could work on it.if i could.
Its in storage yard and no working on stuff aloud, even if i could do any of it. Cant bring it to where i live either. Local mechanic said they are backed up to at least labor day.
