gimbal bearing

alpha one with a mercruiser 5.0 1978

How would i tell if the gimbal baring is bad without putting the boat in the water?Im replaceing all the bellows and just wondering.It spens freely.I just hate to keep dumping money in it.Ive spent alot so far.

You just answered your own question. It spins freely,no bumps,rough spots,tightness,or excessive play. It should be ok. Personally,when doing bellows,I get the entire quicksilver kit,it includes the bearing. All ya need to buy extra is the shift cable.

yep, a gimble brg is good when it has no feel when spinning and no sound, no anything. if it's been contaminated from an outside source replace it. anything other than super smooh and R&R it.

I will say tho it does have a little play in the bearing.Is that normal? I would hate to spend all the crazy money on the tools and ect to remove it and put it in.
