Gimbal housing replacement for 1980 228 V-8, will a 1978 140 work?

I am trying to gather the pieces to reassemble a 19' Sunrunner and have found a donor boat. My original drive package was a 1980 228, with a 305. I have the drive, the inner transom plate and gimbal ring. The bell housing and gimbal housing are missing. I found a complete rotten 1978 boat with a 140 all intact and with good leg. Will that gimbal housing work with my 228 transom plate and V8 exhaust Y? ? My concern is the exhaust connection to the "Y". I have read somewhere but can't find it anymore, that there may be some small hole differences in the lower 2, 3/4" ports.

Could someone please let me know if the 4cyl gimbal housing will work with the V8 transom plate and V-8 Y pipe? What mods if any would need to be made. ie drilling out small holes or ???

Cheers

Paul

PS, what are those 2, 3/4" holes for, and where do they exit? Are these holes that pass thru the transom, where you see water splashing out under the leg, right at the transom? Just extra pressure relief for the V-8? I may have just answered my own question, and it is these holes that need to be drilled out for the V-8, otherwise, the gimbal housing is the same???

So I checked the donor boat to try to determine if the 3/4" holes are drilled through, I couldn't find the end of the hole with the screwdriver from the outside of the boat, and on the inside, I can see the 3/4" holes, where the 2 o-rings would go for the V-8, below the main exhaust port.

So can anybody please confirm that this is the only difference? Do those holes have to be drilled out for V-8?

Thanks

Paul

Ayuh,.... I donno if those housin's will swap, without "Gotchas" or not...
But,...
I Do know ya don't need to be drillin' out those holes,...
They just pass through to the idle relief ports...

Hey Bond-o,

Thanks man. Appreciate the reply. So this leads me to another question, as I am still learning about all this...I found a boat wrecker yard today and they had both 4 cyl and 8 cyl gimbal housings, and I can now clearly see the differences in the 2 housings. The 4 cyl has the idle relief ports drilled to the outside world in the main exhaust port, the big oval hole, the V-8 housing has the relief ports in those 3/4" holes at the bottom and those vent outside below where the 4 cyl holes are. The bolt pattern is identical, although the 4 cyl version doesn't have the bottom 2 holes tapped, no biggie. Otherwise, they look the same.

So, will the 4 cylinder version have enough idle relief with the 2 ports in the 4 cyl version or do I need to drill through the housing, the 2, 3/4" holes?

Thanks and cheers

Paul

PS, or I could go with a thru hull exhaust and put a plate over the gimbal housing ports. :) Now that would sound cool. I could do that instead of buying the corvette when I turn 50. :)

Well, decided I'm going for it, using the 4 cyl gimbal housing and am going to use the exhaust tube, instead of bellows, so all exhaust exits at the surface rather than underwater. That will make it a non issue.
