I picked up a used replacement for my gimble housing and the water tube on the newer housing comes thru in a different direction. Question is, is there a benefit to one over the other ? 260 raw water cooled. See photo

Thanks

Re: Gimbal housing water tube

Just get the proper tube and new rubber busings for your particular setup.
Not sure which is your present setup, but the one on the right also looks to be smaller (5/8"tube) compared to the one on the left which is 3/4".
Also have no idea as to year or anything else about it.

Take the tube out of your housing and put it in the replacement housing. Use a new grommet.

i know nothin bout yer set up or why yer replaceing yer transom shield. however, i would refer to my oem service manual for yer rig. i would inially assume that the way it came apart was correct. but would confirm with the proper merc service manual.... if theyz different dia., it sure seems like a no brainer to go with the proper size that fits yer stuff......direction wize. refer to the service manual.....bet it tells ya exactly what direction it goes...... agree with the others, use new oem parts where applicable and available......

Re: Gimbal housing water tube

I should have given more info...the one on the right is the current set up for a log style manifold (1980 260), with a starboard mounted power steering cooler. I am switching to a center rise manifold set up, and trying to determine which way th go. Both tubes are 5/8" ID.
I am changing the gimbal housing because of a broken piece of the casting.

Thanks for the replies

Use the one that allows you to route your hose to the thermostat housing the easiest with the new manifolds.
