What hole are you trying to solder up?

Re: Gimbal housing

what hole are you trying to fill??

the housing is cast aluminum and probably not a good idea to heat it to fill with solder/aluma-weld

Re: Gimbal housing

why are you trying to fill that hole??

do you know that hole is for access to tighten the transom side clamp for the exhaust bellows??

it is factory original and does not need to be filled, you risk causing damage to the gimbal housing by heating it up like that!!

That don't look so good.....

Dubbs I think he is talking about the galvic corrosion around the gimbal ring hinge pin....
Maybe fill it with JB weld ???

ahhhh...now i see :)

thought he meant outer portion of the gimbal housing

in the case of the gimbal ring being worn, either forget filling it (heat would be a bad idea on that portion of the ring), or get a new gimbal ring (probably time for a new one anyways)

Re: Gimbal housing

Best way is to replace the ring.... I guess you could use JB weld to fill the voids in the metal then sand it smooth.... I would insert some screws coated in grease where the trim limit switch goes and dont get any in the hinge pin hole.

Re: Gimbal housing

Filling it with solder, JB Weld, etc, will make no difference to the strength of your gimbal ring. If you're doing it for looks, any automotive plastic filler (Bondo, etc) will fill it in and make it invisible under a coat of paint. Not sure why you'd want to fill it for looks, it's under the trim senders anyway .....

Just bolt a trim sender over it (working or not, up to you) and you'll never see it.

I would say that you would want to seal that off to prevent further corrosion..

Re: Gimbal housing

I would think JB Weld would do the job, however I would seriously consider having bushings installed into the hinge pin holes, they look pretty rough.
