Gimbal question

[1979 Quartermasters]

I have a 1979 Bayliner, 140 horse Mercruiser, serial# 5213648, pre-Alpha.
I was looking up parts at Iboats and I found a bearing with a trim sender(part #18-2100, Sierra). Not sure if its the right one. Also, when I changed it the last time it came with a seal that went in infront of the bearing. I don't seem to find that seal anywhere.
I believe the water got in at the big rubber seal where the drive meets the gimbal ring. Pardon the terminology, I hope you know what I mean. Is there a way to get that seal to stay in place while I push the drive into place. Thanks for your help, Ken

I just glue the rubber ring into the Gimbal Housing using bellows adhesive. Even contact cement would work. It's just to hold the gasket in place until the housing is installed.

Thanks for your quick response. Is it possible thats where the water came from. I checked everywhere else and I can't see any damage to any of the bellows. If I remember correctly, that ring came out wrinkled.

If the water did come from there, it's probably because the transom is rotten. If that's the case, a new seal isn't going to work, because the bolts will just collapse the rotten wood in the transom when you put it back together.

Just to make sure we are talking about the same parts. I am referring to the seal between the Gimbal housing and the transom.

Thanks for your help. I will look into it further. Just went farther down the post and found your picture. What I am refuring to is the seal that goes over the drive shaft, u-joints and onto the upper gear case which slides into the bell housing. I hope this is more clear.

Are you referring to #8 in this picture? If so, yes, it can cause water to come in if it is dislodged during assembly. Glue it in place.

If water is getting past that seal, then it's getting past something else first. Either the bell housing gasket, or (more likely) the upper shift shaft seal (#7 in Fishermark's picture).
