Gimbal Ring Play

1999 5.0 L Merc with an Alpha 1 Gen 2 lower end with relatively low hours. How much play between the bell housing and the gimbal ring is considered too much. I have a bit more sideways play then up and down - maybe a 1/4".

are the synthane washer in there.1 on each side between the bell and the ring.?

Are you sure that it is side to side play, and not play between the gimbal ring and and the upper swivel shaft? Try retorquing the gimbal ring clamping screws to 50-55 ft lb, see if that tightens things up a bit. Should be part of annual maintenance anyway. Good luck

I am not sure where the play is. The bolts that should be tightehned - are you reffering to the ones behind the trim switches?

No he means the two at the top of the gimbal ring. They clamp it to the swivel shaft.
