What's the concensus about using or not using a sealant of some sort when reinstalling the gimball housing to the stern? When I took mine off it looked like the previous owner/servicer used silicone. The gasket design suggests to me no sealant is required. If folks do use a sealant what is recommended?

Re: Gimball Housing Re-install

sroger, The only place I use silicone is on the little O-ring for the raw water intake. Don't know if this is the "correct" way, but I have never had any problems, and I pull my drive every winter............oops I juat realized you said gymbal housing. I don't know about that, I have never taken it off the boat.........

Re: Gimball Housing Re-install

If I'm not mistaken, (and I could be!), the seal is glued into the gimbal housing, but is supposed to be installed "dry" onto the transom itself. I am about to reinstall my gimbal housing and I am faced with the same question. I am considering using some silicone gell - kinda like vaseline, except it is not petroleum based - it is used on o-rings for pool filters.
