Gimble bearing removal help

I am in the process of putting a new outdrive on my boat after the old one grenaded. I have run into a problem. I cannot seem to remove the outer race of the gimble bearing. I got the inside portion out but no amount of beating on it with a slide hammer seemed to budge it. I even heated the outside casing with a torch some to no avail. I am to the point where I am thinking I will have to cut it out. I am hoping someone here has a better idea before I start hacking away. I would really rather not cut it out. And yes I removed the snap ring. :p

Use a bigger slider hammer.
Believe me, it will come out if you hit the bearing housing like you KNOW it will come out.

The slide hammer I use is 15 pounds, and I still have to put quite a bit of umph behind it when I have done gimbal bearings (twice).

I saw in a how-to posted on some site that they pull the engine sometimes when the bearing is really stuck so they can hammer it from the inside. I am not sure how practical that approach is. I would think the slide hammer would do the same thing, just MUCH easier. Maybe someone more experience could explain the advantage...
