gimble bearing

I just purchased a 1975 sea-ray boat with 302 ford engine that has a bad gimble bearing,I have never worked on a outdrives before but,I'm a auto tech.To replace the bearing do I have to remove engine???? I removed the out drive and shaft,is this suppose to be clean and dry????? any help or advice would be greatly appresiated

NO, You dont have to remove the engine. And the splines should be greased with marine grease. Also grease the u-joints. Check this link out, it should help you with your gimble bearing. Gimble bearing replacement<br />And for parts check this link. Bearing
