Hello, I have a 2007 volvo penta SX-A drive that the gimble bearing is walking out of the housing. Other than a new housing any other suggestions for a solution? Apoxy/shim etc? Thanks

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... I've saved class 8 truck/ trailer wheel hubs by prick punching little divots around the hole the bearing is driven into,....

Haven't had reason too, but would do the same on a transom housing if necessary,.....
The draw back there would be placement of the divots to be sure the entire circumference of the tolerance ring rides on the divots,....

Exactly I would stake the housing like bondo suggested and try using a retaining compound like the loctite green or if really worn loctite 660 works really well.

You probably have to pull the bellows off to stake it

A light scuff with sandpaper on each surface wouldn't hurt if you're easy and not changing tolerances.

That is a bit unusual, have you checked the engine alignment, there should be very little load on the gimbal bearing For & Aft.
I wonder if anyone has removed the corrugated band that surounds the race and provides friction?

Most likely previous bearing was worn out and someone kept running it until it spun damaging the aluminum housing.

Or the replacement bearing is of lower quality and the tolerance ring is not the right dimension

Might be worth trying a different supplier bearing

The reason is usually due to water ingress wearing away at the internals holding the bearing, either from leaky bellows or the grease nipple.

I've had this myself.

As advised, the best way it to stake around where the bearing fits, then use Loctite 641 designed to retain bearings.

I pulled the gimble bearing this weekend to replace, also on my SX-M and the staking and 641 held it in solid, had to use the bearing removal tool to pull this back out and even then there were some challenges.

Both bearings used were non-oem, instead using a quality american made aftermarket product, afterall they're all supplied by SKF bearings.

My older thread on this:

Hello, thank you for the reply. My apologies I am not mechanically inclined. When you say "stake" around where the bearing fits could you elaborate on what "stake" means please.
Thanks for the reply.
