ok...trying to remove the gimble ring from the gimble housing.
73 Merc 888

the lower pivot shaft has a cotter pin going through it (which of course, broke off) i figure i'm going to have to drill out the cotter pin but after that is where i'm stuck.
from the service manual, it states that pivot shaft is just pressed in, but mine looks like the bottom side of that shaft has a groove all the way across it (for an oversized screwdriver) so i was wondering if this pin is just pressed in or is it screwed in??

The slot across the bottom is so it can be turned to line it up for the split pin to go though. It is pressed in, not screwed... Also you'll need to punch out the remnants of the old pin... Try to drill it and you could end up with a disaster... The pin is stainless, and split. The drill will slide to one side and as the housing is aluminium it will drill that, not the stainless.

thanks for the info...

i don't recall seeing it, but is there an access hole in the side of the gimble housing that lines up with the cotter pin in the gimble ring?

safe to assume that i can put a little heat on it?? that pin isn't budging..and i don't wanna apply too much force on the gimble housing

thoughts?

Identical? No... From memory the difference is the exhaust relief holes. I think the V8s had the holes drilled all the way through. The in-line engines didn't.
