OMC to Mercruiser transome redo. Alpha One - Have the transom done and the crank center hole drilled as a 1/8 hole. I dont have the Mercruiser template, but i have a template from a donor boat. In the manual it doen't give the demention from the cutout top or bottom to the center. Trying to figure out how far from the bottom of the hull to place the template? If anyone has one of the mercruiser template can i get a measurement from the center to the bottom of the cutout? This is a one shot deal so i want to get it right. Thanks

Check page 35, Determine the centerline of you transom plate. The transom plate is mounted first using the centerline of the boat, the motor is installed to meet that.

The center it shows on the template is not the center of the cutout top to bottom. If you measure from the top of cutout to that center is not the same as the measurement from the bottom cut to the center.

You match up the centerline marks on the hull with the centerline marks on the template ,

As in my first post i dont have that Mercruiser templat, I have a donor boat template, It's a cut out of the outer fiberglass of a donor boat. Thats why i asked if anyone had the measurement from the center to the bottom cutout? thanks Doc

He doesn't have a template, that's his problem. All he has is the cutout from the old transom.

Here is the Volvo SX template http://www.4shared.com/account/document/tCGrNJY4/SX_Transom_shield_cutout_templ.html

The cutout and crankshaft centerline are the same. We always used the cutout template (The metal one) for both Merc and Volvo and never had any issues at all. Kind of why it's known as the marine standard cutout.

Use the dimension for the bottom bolt holes to locate your cutout to the correct height.

RE: to our discusion on figuring out the proper height with our donor boat templets, Bondo. Get that boat cleaned out and get busy, might be the only Old Town you have this year. Just find demention X via Mercruiser manual and the measurements from bolt holes to X demention from the Volvo SX Via Don S and Whala! :D

Looks good, I assume you checked for clearance between the arms of the exhaust Y and the stringers. Haver run into a number of leaks because they were touching and wouldn't allow the pipe to seat properly on the transom shield.
You didn't paint it black before installing? or is that just the sunlight making it look brown?

Got my P-steering piston, trim pump in today too. Going to beef my stringers tomorrow, their hollow i'm going to bolt 4x4s inside them to lag mount to. Thanks Don
