This is part funny and a bit frustrating. I've had this boat--16' Arrowglass--since July and it's been nothing but headaches. I've been towed in every week-end for the past 6 weeks (o/b problems)! Finally get the motor running good and I sink the boat--Yesterday. I guess hurricane Isidore has sent a lot of big waves our way. I had the boat anchored outside the break at an island in the inter-coastal and was standing on the beach. I looked out and this huge wave crashes over the top of my boat, floods it, and down it goes. Luckily about 15-20 guys on the beach (all half-drunk so they couldn't agree on the "right way" to fix this) came out to help and we were able to drag it in before it hit bottom. They tipped it on it's side and dumped all the water out (along with my cell phone, car keys, tools, ect..) so I was able to get towed in. I guess that's a blessing in itself but I feel like an *ss every time I take that thing out and have to get rescued. :(
p.s.--i'll do a post in o/b engines forum for help with the motor because it's not running yet.

Don't give up. It gets better. I had nothing but trouble with my first old boat for about a year and a half. During that time I got really discouraged, made a lot of mistakes, and spent a lot more money than I wanted to. But, I got a lot of past due repairs done, and I learned a lot about almost everything on the boat the hard way (the best way). Now, I know the boat's limits and expect trouble every time I go out, but have less as time goes on. Last week, I was telling my oldest son about the boat when he laughed and said, "sounds like it breaks down every time you use it." Instead of thinking, yeah, it's been a drag, I realized he didn't understand boating. Might be time to pick up a copy of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." ;)

Trish, it does not matter if you are a girl, boy woman, man. Stuff happens (trying to stay clean). If everything went well, we would never learn anything. That is why the board is here. Everyone has come asking for help or trying to help somone with the same problems they have experienced. Good luck with the motor. If it not running now, I think it will need an immediate and complete teardown because of the salt water. Insurance?

Two things.
1 It does not matter boy, girl, man or woman a boat can be trouble if you are new at it. Sometimes even if you are an old hand you can screw things up so don't get discouraged.
2 Be glad you are a girl as you actually were able to get lots of help. If a guy did something like that all the other guys would do is laugh thier buts off.

Thanks guys ;) I've cooled off a lot today. I'm ready to get back out there (possibly in the rain) and work on getting this thing started again. And you're right-- I'm lucky to have so much help. Wish me luck... :)

Doo Doo occurs. Never assume that everyone else out there has not had problems.
We have a rule, with our group of friends who boat. ALways carry your cell. Always answer it. We try to run in our pack formation. Every single one of us has been towed/tow boat this season.
Even people that I work with but don't know well I have given my cell number in case they get into trouble. Never hurts to have help a call or two away.

Last weekend, I finally got my first chance this season to return the favor. It felt good to be on the pulling end of the rope for a change! ;)

Yup, if you boat long enough, you'll be at both ends of the rope.

Cool to see my post at the top again. It's those disasters that make you appreciate the smooth days out on the water so much more. Since getting the motor fixed, the boat's been working great for the past month or so--even took it camping on one of those islands. :D What an awesome place to live and to have a boat...no regrets! ;)
p.s.--I live about a block away from Molly Goodheads in Ozona.

A ship in a harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for.
