Glass on Stringers

How much is enough? In rebuilding my 15' tri-hull w/ 85hp V4, I have come upon an interesting question. How thich shoiuld I make the glass on teh stringers? I currently have 2 layers of heavily resined 1.5oz mat. Is this sufficient? It seems very solid, but I don't want to ever do this job again. I thought ablout a layer of 18oz woven roving. I know that is probably overkill. Is what I have enough or would you add more?

Re: Glass on Stringers

I am going with a four inch strip on each side of each stringer, followed by a second layer of mat that goes all the way to the top of each stringer. That is sufficient, as it is more than what it had originally.

Just be realistic about it. Do at least as much as was done originally, the boat lasted three decades before you rebuilt it, the odds are minimal that you will have the boat long enough to wear it out again.

Re: Glass on Stringers

I think I'm pretty close to original thickness. The factory stuff seemed to be one layer of light woven roving. My 2 layers of mat seem pretty close. I may be hosed anyway since the mat has already cured. Fortunately, the floor in this boat is a structural component and it will be glassed in well. I also added some extra supports to tie the stringers together, so I think all may be well. I'll lay the floor over the next couple days and start getting the boat back together. I still have new steering, tilt/trim, and all new electrics to add.
