Today we were driving back from Austin to Houston from a great weekend at lake Travis!
Halfway home i glanced in the mirror and it looked like ice flying out of the boat
The port side window shattered
guess it was a rock the kind of road where the put down tar and dump little pebbles on it
any ideas how much a curved window glass will cost me 1997 Larson 206 sei

make sure you are sitting down... now have a stiff drink. Take your best guess, and multiply it times 10x. Boat glass is EXTREMELY expensive, IF you can even find it. (you may not be able to) Your best bet is to find a boat junkyard some where, you might get lucky.

I concure, but if the boat is still being made today you may get lucky. If not...and you can draw it up on paper or pattern it,your next option will be Glass Benders Glass Bending...or if the radius is 57" or greater you can have a laminated one made at Glasswerks in Los Angeles,Ca.I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, hopefully you can find the OEM since it proberbly has a black frit band around the edge that protects the sealant from the sun.Let me know how you fare,I manage a Auto/Boat/Residential Glass shop in Santa Barbara,Ca. and will try to help anyway I can.

Re: Glass shattered!!!

would insurance pay for it?
It definately is a insurance isue if the claim is addressed corectly. You have to be very carefull how you describe breakage anymore. There are some companys now for cars and boats that say if the vehicle is in motion and your glass gets broken by a foreign object it is considered a "collision"
falling under that on your policy....raising your rates. It truly should be a comprehensive claim and the best thing you can do is claim you do not know how, when or why it happened.Tempered Glass has been known to implode on its own and with it having a bend to it it kind of creates more question acordingly.a no brainer to just play dumb and pay the Comp. deductable.
Good Luck

Did they kiss you first, LOL
$7,500 is insane, they just didn't want your business, and yes your insurance will cover it.

see my first post, pretty accurate! :D $750 would have been reasonable, but then you have to take the 10x rule.

It'd be cheaper to buy another boat. Would plexiglass work? I had one custom made for my center console and it cost me $150.

Re: Glass shattered!!!

Keep calling around. You should be able to get that made for a grand or two.

Just for reference, last year I had 4 custom cut and tempered tinted windows made for my hard top project. The glass is flat, and cost about $600 for the set.

Holy crap, tinted (Solex green, gold, black) 6mm tempered glass costs like $7 per square foot. You guys are getting hosed big time! We buy that stuff in 9 square foot pieces all the time(approx. cost of $45 per sheet with sanded/polished edges). I am certain that most boats use about 4mm glass too. Something ain't kosher bill! I'd be checking with actual glass shops and not automotive glass shops for the flat stuff.

Now curved stuff is a bit more pricey, I'll ask around our suppliers to see what they say.

yep, standard tinted stock is cheap. But its also useless for custom work. Custom glass has to be cut, then tempered piecemeal. Not as cheap as bulk stock sheets. And you can't cut a piece of tempered glass. It has to be measured, template made, cut, THEN tempered.

And thats why custom cut tempered glass is expensive.

Also, 7 sq ft sounds cheap for bulk glass. Are you sure it tempered? What are you using it for? If you cut it, its not tempered. And tempered glass does not come with sanded edges. It's sanded before tempering but the temper process makes the edges melt a bit so its all shiny.

Ask them for a price using Lexan with a scratch resistant coating. Should only be a few dollars more, and is well worth the price. The coating keeps the plastic from getting all fogged from rubbing with paper towels, and dirt being wiped around when washed. And it won't yellow like plexy over time.
