Re: pic of work so far

Thanks Buddie, right after I wrote that i was in HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual and was reading ondarvr post in there , and that hit the nail on the head , Where my diamond plate was , Its all cracked up and the fiberglass is cracked .

I was thinking i was going to have to re-glass that area, and i was also thinking it needs some support under there , its where everyone steps to get in and out of the boat while were tubbing . what i was thinking i could do it from underneath, I was thinking that i could glass in some plywood under there !!

Do anyone see a problem with doing it from underneath , instead of grinding all the gel coat off?? I am going to have to grind a lot of the gel coat off but not all of it , unless someone see a problem with doing it from underneath !!

On Ondarvr post he said you have to grind all the the gel coat off where the gel coat is all cracked up !! OK when i post some pics later there is one spot where It looks like someone dropped something heavy on the side of the rail !! now ondarvr was saying that you have to find out why is all cracked up , and fix the glass , I havent really looked that hard at it yet but I dont think there is anything wrong with the glass , should i reinforce that spot also ??

As for the gelcoat I got to do some running , and will look at the local marine shop here !! I still have some marine tex, but if i keep grinding here i am going to need more !!and as far as matching the gel coat I know it not going to !!when I was putting the Marine-Tex on I was thinking that I am going to have to paint the hole thing with primer before I paint her !!

Ok more later John

Re: pic of work so far

This post was one of the Gods on here that been in the business for ever

i wasn't sure if you were asking about using gel coat to do the repairs, or if you wanted to re-gel coat the whole boat.
Using gel coat for the repairs is easy and will be fine, re-gel coating the whole boat is a ton of work.

Crack repair can be tough, if the reason for the cracking is that the gel coat is too thick, then even if you repair it the cracks will come back as soon as that area gets stressed. The only way to make it thinner is to grind it off, build the laminate surface up underneath it and then re-gel coat.

If the reason for the cracking is due to flexing, the area needs to be supported better to reduce the flex, or the cracks will be back the first time it does flex.

If the cracking is from a one time impact, the gel coat and glass needs to be removed (sanding) down to a level where the cracks stop, then rebuild the area back to the original shape.

Epoxy filler is stronger than gel coat and will resist re-cracking a little better, but what happens is a new crack can form in the gel coat right next to the one you just fixed with epoxy. So it really needs to be fixed correctly when using either product. One other thing with epoxy is it's harder to sand than gel coat, so when you try to fair it back into shape many times the gel coat around the epoxy repair sands down at a faster rate leaving the epoxy repair higher than the surrounding area.

On any type of crack you need to remove the entire crack from end to end and as deep as it goes, if you don't the chances of it returning in a short time are very high.

Re: pic of work so far

Hay Bud,

the marine -tex isn't that bad , last week when i work it in some of the spiders that i ground out , I made a bunch of it and 30 min, later it was still workable , the temp was in the upper 50's so that helped a lot , I didn't care how long it took to harden, cause i wasn't going to sand till today !!

and sanding it isn't that bad either , it a little harder the the gel-coat , and i am cheating , I am using a parallel that is hardened steel , useing the sharp edge and scraping it frist !!! man is it cutting down on the grinding !!! am it is pertty smooth even before i grind !!

So i did get some boards cut to fit under the jack stands , got it up about another 4 inchs !! I am going to try it there !!

While i was under there , i was looking at the keel [ the bottom of the center deep v ] and there is some wear under there not to bad but down to the glass !! I am going to have to build it up with the marine tex !! i was looking at them keel gaurds before , i think I will put one one her !!! Other then that , there is just the one gouge that i did with the trailor !! and that is only a little over a inch !! the rest under there looks really good !! except right under the transom there is a spot that i really didnt get a good look at yet !!

and i will get some pics also up tomorrow !! John

Re: pic of work so far

Hay all , didnt get a lot done on her today !1 did fix a spots on the transom . Where i clamped the motor mounts crack the glass , so i ground out two slits about 4 inchs above the spots where the clamps sit. I mixed up some epoxy and poured it in there , before that I duct taped under there so it wouldnt leak out , then poured it in !! it still leaked , not much then when it set , i mixed another batch and pryed the slots open again shoved a bunch of glass in there after i weted it out and then poured some more epoxy in there !!! Its not going anywhere now !! I will post some pics later!!

Did get a little more grinding done and scraped some of the really high spots on the marine tex !!

Re: pic of work so far

Hi all , man I cant lift my arms !!!! Man this sanding stinks !!!!! lol I got out there about 11:00 [ mom and dad stooped bye before they left for Florida] so got out there and man sanded and sanded some more !

I got about a good 5 hours sanding and got about 1/8 of her sanded !! and at this rate I was thinking how long its going to take to get to painting , and i came up with about 40 hours to get there !! and if i get 10 hours of good work on her a week !! that going to put me at the middle of Feb,

Then to get her painted , what a good 15 to 20 hours , with 3 coats and then one clear coat to put on, and the sticker under the last clear coat. When I put the clear coat on , I was thinking should i clear coat the hole thing or can i just clear the side and the top ?????

OK so that is going to be at least the beginning of march, and then a month to let her dry thats April !!!!! IN THE WATER !!!!!! I HOPE !!!! LOL

OK so thats my time line i was thinking !!! so if it goes the way the stringer and the transom went that is going to be July !!! hahahaha John man my arms are barking at me !!!!

Re: pic of work so far

Hi all , well it was another great day covered in gel-coat !! lol Man did I say june , lol I got about 4 hours good grinding done on her, there are 6 bad spots on the boat , the transom , the splash well , the helm , the keel, and the bow top side , and there is about a foot on the starboard side where the window mounts .

Well on just the top, I got just about 50% of it ground down to where i can get ,{ I hope ] My last coating of marine tex on and then the final sanding !!

I got in the last two days the helm just about ready and the splash well , and the port side on the top, from the helm to the splash well !!!

When i was cleaning the dust off tonight i found a couple spots that had that have some waves in the gel-coat that i have to hit again .but other then that I am really please with it , the corners are really a pain to get rounded, and straight !!

With the helm and the slash well and the spot on the starboard side all most ready for marie tex , the worst parts are all most ready , the transom just getting it flat , from where the old bolts sunk in the gel coat .

Next time dont let me buy a boat with all them holes in her !! lol

I will get some pics up tomorrow !! or the next !! lol man my arms are feeling it !!John

Re: pic of work so far

Well I got about 4 hours out on her today , And you know what , " I am cooking with gas " I got the air grinder out and man it really takes it off, the only thing is my big tank isn't working, a 220, 20 gal, tank its plugged in the valve, so i got my pancake tank out , run the heck out of it !! it would run out of air after about 5 mins, so went back to the palm sander till it filled up !!

I also picked up some more 6 inch 320 grit sticky pads didnt like them to well , on the foam pad , they will work when i get to the bottom half, theres not so much to take off !!

I did learn one thing through all this grinding , with the marine-tex . you only got to put it on very light just fill the hole.

I did find a couple more spiders that i got ground out also !! man is it ever going to end !! lol

I know i said i will get some pics up , I will tomorrow , wish you guys could really see how smooth she is turning out !!

I might even get to the bow tomorrow !!! I hope !!lol John

Re: pic of work so far

Hay guys and Gals !!

Well , I got 8 plus hours on her !!
Its turning out pertty good !!
My little pancake did really great ,
I oiled the sander really well before i started this morning .
It would run even when i ran the tank out ,
now it wasnt as fast as it could have been but it didnt get me in trouble like it would have with it running full out !!

Boat015-2.jpg

Boat003-3.jpg

5 inch sanding pad 220 grit !!
I ran out of disk so at 6;30 i had to quit !!!

Ok now here is the transom ,
there are two cracks i ground out bigger so i could shove epoxy and glass in there ,
the transom is at a little different angle then where the splash well meets the transom ,
so there was a gap in there that i didnt know about till i put the motor on there last year ,
when i tightened up the motor mounts i cracked her .
So here the pics of the splahwell ,
there is still a little more i want to clean up on there ,
then a hole lot of marine-tex to it !!!lol
