Drained the drive oil and to my horror i find this:

IMG_0850.jpgIMG_0855.jpg

Seems like one thing after another with this old boat. What usually causes this? There were no chunks of metal just real fine metallic particles. And the oil looked fairly clean not burnt. Does the upper start shedding metal first? Would the metal in the oil have worn all the other moving parts inside the drive? I was planning on rebuilding the upper this winter but should i now look into rebuilding the whole thing?

Re: Glitter in oil

It says in the Volvo manuals that fine particles are normal and expected. As long as you cannot feel them in between your fingers your drive is fine.

That's a LOT of glitter.
Was it like that the last time you changed the oil?
Some fine particles are ok.
Normal wear.
But that's a lot.
Rebuild.

Re: Glitter in oil

I changed the oil in the drive this summer, ran the boat for two and a half months ~ 35 hours and that's what's came out. Any suggestions on where to rebuild?

Re: Glitter in oil

I don't know how much an oil analysis would cost, but it might be helpful to try to identify if that is brass or steel glitter, which would then give you a clue as to where it is coming from, and in turn where to start looking. I believe brass glitter from the cone clutches is normal wear. (does your AQ270 have the cone clutches?)
Off the top of my head, if you warmed the oil up (reduce the viscosity) then waved a strong magnet about in the oil and see if it picks up a furring of steel particles. I have not tried this but it might work!!
