Here's a guide to ads for used outboards on eBay and Craig's List, to help you decipher what the sellers are saying:

Needs a little TLC -- Doesn't run. Don't have a clue why.

Probably needs the carb cleaned -- Doesn't run. Don't have a clue why.

Shifter needs adjusting -- Dogs worn out in lower unit. Plan on spending $250 to fix.

Ran great last time I used it -- Then it broke and I couldn't fix it.

Don't have a fuel tank -- I have one, but no way am I going to try to start this turkey.

Runs great in barrel -- It's only firing on one cylinder, but will die on the lake.

Well maintained by my father -- That was 15 years ago. He died. It's been hanging in the garage since then.

Fogged before storage -- Doesn't run. Don't have a clue why.

It's from Sears, so it must be good -- Doesn't run. No parts available.

Prop Missing -- I put the prop on the other engine... the one that runs...three years ago.

Should start right up -- Right. My shoulder's still sore from trying.

Has compression -- I pulled the rope and felt something.

Classic, vintage outboard -- This thing's older than heck. Doesn't run. Don't have a clue why.

Used at family cabin -- Yes, 20 years ago. Since then, it's been under the porch.

Lightly used -- I wore this thing out fishing five days a week.

Fresh plugs -- I found some spark plugs in my toolbox and put 'em in. It still doesn't run.

Model number tag missing -- My brother-in-law stole this, and I'm selling it for him.

Starts right up -- Then it sputters and dies. Again, and again.

Gone through last season -- My nephew rebuilt the carburetor, and it hasn't run right since.

Lake ready -- Will work as anchor...guaranteed.

Fresh lower unit oil -- I replaced it, because the old oil looked like a McDonald's vanilla shake.

Probably just needs coil -- Yup, but, since it's an Eska solid-state ignition, that coil is not available.

Bought new motor, don't need ... This one croaked, so I got a new one. Doesn't run. Don't have a clue why.

Strong runner -- I am, not the outboard. I don't live at the place where I sold it to you.

Broken transom mount, easy fix -- Yeah, right. I looked for a year, and when I found one, it was $200.

Must sell soon-- If I don't sell this piece of junk, I'm hauling it to the landfill.

Collector's outboard -- Doesn't run. Don't have a clue why.

Rare Model -- It's rare all right. All of them broke and are in the scrap pile.

They don't make them like this any more -- True. The company went out of business in 1943.

Looks great -- Doesn't run, so I polished it.

Perfect for jonboat -- Air-cooled Clinton or Eska-based. Jonboats are easy to row when it quits on lake.

New water pump -- New when installed in 1973. It was. Really.

Comes with controls -- They froze up over the winter. So I replaced them when I bought the new outboard. This one doesn't run.

Re: Glossary for Used Outboard Ads

Good list, but in these parts, it needs a few additions:

Hasn't been used much the last few years: = No one can keep the darn thing working, so we gave up on it.

Well maintained: = I usually remember to mix oil with the gas.

Shows normal wear: = beat to cr@p.

Very fast: = has been abused mercilessly.

Worked the last time I used it: = it broke the last time I used it.

:)

Re: Glossary for Used Outboard Ads

kind of like real estate as well
one for the handy man = it is in ruins
close to transport = the railway line runs past the back fence
rustic charm = it is in ruins
large block of land = at low tide
quaint cottage = older than the hills and it is in ruins too
quiet location = in no mans land near the toxic swamp
water views = it floods often
