Gluing carpet down--Does it go in the channels or on top of them??

I have a '72 Glassply which had textured vinyl flooring, which I'm replacing with carpet. The flooring was no longer glued down and had shrunk a lot, so I don't know exactly how it was originally glued in. There are channels along the edges of the floor, which I assume are for excess water to run in, but I'm not sure if the carpet is to be glued lin stretched over the tops of the channels, leaving the channels open, or glued into the bottoms of the channels. There are no drain holes in the channels and there's nowhere for the water to go once it's in them, so I assume that the carpet should be glued down solidly into the channels. Anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

Channels? Are you talking about groves 1/8 th of an inch or less, or depressions one inch or wider? How deep?

Each has its own answer.

The proper glue is probably something like 3M Weatherstrip or its equivalent.

These are about 1/4 inch deep and 1" wide. They don't appear to have ever had drain holes in them. They're smooth and semi-circular. They don't have any glue residue in them, but the residue is gone on most of the floor. The boat was stored outside and had water in it pretty often.

I was planning on using an indoor-outdoor carpet adhesive that's waterproof, but it might be too strong for the job.

You might want to rethink your decision to use carpet a bit... it sounds like your deck was designed to manage water a certain way, so you may end up with puddles under the carpet.

Consider maybe using snap-in carpet sections that you can take out to clean?
