Need a transmission guys opinion..

Can a 700r4 be built to handle towing 6000lbs of boat, without heating up to 250+ degrees and spilling its guts..

I'm very weary of the 700r4... Spent serious $$$ on them before... Trust em' about as far as I can throw one (which incidently, is about 10 feet, minus the converter  ).. I've blown up two of em' and I keep putting an old beat down junkyard th350 back in...

Also been thinking about running a th350 or th400 with a gear vendors overdrive, but that is some real serious cash to lay out... Dunno if I can justify the cost there..

Opinions please.. thank you.. :)

Hey snap, I persoanlly love the t350, had a few and 150-200K no prob out of them, LAWAYS ran coolers though and chgd. fluid every 12K or so and filter. T400 good too, bigger and real picky about filter chgs. 700R4 is nice as it has O/D and saves gas, they can be built w/ H/D clutch packs to handle load, also install external COOLER and run synthetic fluid perhaps. I ran synthetic in the last 700r4 that blew up... Honestly, i think the synthetic had something to do with it going poof!.. I dunno..

I have the biggest cooler available, with a dedicated electric fan...It's good for like 30,000+lbs. .. Darn near big as the radiator...

Hmm, you know guys on my Jeep board dont like to run synthetic in the autos(AW4's damn near indestructable) and claim tranny NEEDS SOME friction on cluches - keltonkrew will disagree with this :) , Im just not sure. So far I just use dino and each tranny svc it comes out CLEAN after 20 -30K, I just run factory cooler too. I only tow my boat which Im guessin is 2000 all total? 17 ' alum, and 40 Merc and trailer. Did you have HD clutch packs? How many miles til failure? How much you towin? Did you upgrade torque converter too? Heinz

Re: GM 700r4 transmission. Can it take the pressure?

The transmission was a TCI performance/towing tranny.. Heavy duty everything... 13 vane pump, big servo, HD clutch discs, ect... Darn near everything that could be upgraded, was... New converter (lockup) with a slightly higher stall than stock...

Failure was at 5000 miles.. Puked it's guts pulling out of a parking lot, trans temp was 160...Barely warm... It shifted first to second fine, but then it would'nt go into third.... Somewhere in that time frame, the input shaft spun a bushing in the stator on the pump, in turn, taking out everything...

I bought the service manual :D and did the dis-assembly on it myself with total intent to rebuild, but found the lugs in the case that hold the discs in the low/reverse clutch pack were eat up and grooved beyond use... The pump was trashed, converter too of course, input shaft ate up, metal shavings everywhere...

Normal driving, it would heat up to around 180-200*, a tad more in stop and go traffic.. Only towed my little boat maybe 1500lbs loaded, 6-8 times and then only short trips (10-12 miles one way, mostly interstate speeds, no overdrive).. The trans did not like that at all... Heat up real fast, so i know it was slipping...

Return that POS! Geez I've been towing my 17' alum (maybe 2000 lbs) for 3 yrs w/ STOCK Jeep 4.0 auto and now Jeep has 150K on it!!! NO PROBS! You got a bad one snap(what was warr.?) and if it were me I'd be steaming pissed to get them to replace NOW! Heinz

700R4 ares plauged with problems IF the TV cable is not adjusted properly. Lots of people have problems with them because they do not adjust the cable correctly. Not saying this has been your problem, but it could have been.

Re: GM 700r4 transmission. Can it take the pressure?

I tore down the transmission when it went poof.. They said the warranty was null and void cause i tore down the transmission to find the cause of the problem.. Found that out the hard way..

After the fact, and a bunch of *****ing and complaining on my part, they "offered" to fix it (free labor  )...

$100 bucks for me to ship it out to em', then another $100 for them to ship it back to me, plus the cost of parts which as you can see was going to be substantial, and knowing the case and converter were trashed also, why bother... Could have probably just bought another one for what it would cost to fix, which i doubt they could fix it anyway cause the lugs in the case were trashed and i told them so..

when ya don't even have the $$$ to pay to ship it, let alone fix or replace it, yer screw'd.... Thankfully the th350 i pulled out, aside from a few minor leaks, was still good, and now 4 years later it's just starting to show signifigant wear... This junkyard th350 and the new converter i bought for it, best $300 bucks i ever spent.. :)

Anywhoo.. FWIW, Truck's a chevy 1500 standard cab, long bed.. actual weight is 3850lbs with half tank of gas and driver.. 350/5.7 making 350 hp, no blower, no nitrous... near as i can tell the rear is close to a 3.50 ratio...

More I think about it, more I like my old th350..

Good call on the TV cable, but mine was adjusted correctly..

Yo snap, I know youre gettin sick of this, but TCI should have stood by warr., parts, labor and ship - you didnt screw up, THEY did - dude I feel your frustration......and god yes T350's have always been my fav after all the stuff I did w/ them. Sorry Snap:(

Re: GM 700r4 transmission. Can it take the pressure?

Yep.. Buyer beware.. 4 years ago, I'm over it.. Won't buy anything else from tci, guarnteed..

Anywhooo, FWIW, I will be picking one from the bone yard and building the next one, reguardless of which tranny i do go with...

Got a transmission shop right next to my shop... Played guitar with the owner (drummer) for a while, said he'd help me out with the special tools, parts, and advice if need be.... That way, nobody to blame but myself if it pukes..

p.s. ease up with the quotes already.. e-gad man! :p
