Re: GM marine engine

I don't think GM dealers actually sell marine specific engines. Some Mr. Goodwrench engines are actually industrial engines that will fit a marine application.

I had a friend that let his 305 Chevy I/O freeze up, and I talked with my boat mechanic. He gave me the GM parts number of a 350 cubic inch engine that would work. My friend swapped the long blocks, and saved about $3,500. While the GM engine didn't have the marine camshafts, it made up for it in sheer horsepower.

I would be hesitant to use the Mr. Goodwrench motor in saltwater, however. It's seldom said, but Mercruiser engines use a different cast iron recipe than GM automobile engines. Freeze plugs would also need to be swapped out. And you never want to use auto starters and alternators in marine use.

What exactly are you trying to find out, I doubt if you are just curious about how many have or not.

Re: GM marine engine

I need a 350 engine for my son's boat. He was told on some forum that a person bought a GM marine engine through
a GM dealer. I work at a Chevrolet parts department. My parts rep said that he didn't think marine engines were available to
us to order. I am just trying to find out if I am able to buy marine engines. Thank you, John

Nope! Same exact block

From the link below from GM
Marine Engine Introduction

GM Powertrain has designed a number of important features into its marine engines, such as corrosion-resistant alloys

Wasn't true for many years, but it doesn't surprise me that things are changing for the better in marine engines.

lots of people use the GMPP crate 290hp/350 in older boats. It has almost identical specs to the 1970s/early 80's 5.7 used by OMC and Mercruiser, including the 2 pc rear main seal (a requirement for OMC stringer drive boats). Just pop out the core plugs and put brass ones in.
But as you probably know, the warranty says void if used in marine application.
