I have a older 9.9 out board Evenrude that the shifter & speed control was vandalized and the marina mechanic got it running but the motor is not charging the battery. The mechanic "adjusted" the shift arm and speed control so they do not move up & down the entire length or where they used to be. Can the shift arm not being in the correct spot prevent charging? ANY HELP ON THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED, I DON'T THINK THAT MARINA MECHANIC IS ON OUR SIDE. E MAIL- garypoling64@Gmail.com
THanks

Charging is associated with the stator and rectifier, is everything wired up properly? Shifter shouldn't have anything to do with charging.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY, I DID NOT WIRE THIS BOAT, IT'S NEW TO US EVEN THO ITS A OLDER BOAT/ EVENRUDE, I THINK IT DID WORK BEFORE SOME CREEP SCREWED THE CONTROLS UP. I JUST ORDERED A REPAIR MANUAL TO SEE HOW THE WIRING IS AND WHERE THOSE ITEM ARE THAT YOU REFERED TO. I though maybe the shift lever or gas feed levers had to be in a certain position while running so the battery would charge. Gp

Great website, so quick & nice of these helpful replies ! We just got this used pontoon boat & had Haines marine put it in the water, went down to use it and the shifter & speed control was (on purpose) jammed up with great force and the helper from Hanies came down and got us going but some problems like this still exist and this motor was just rebuilt by Boat Masters in Akron, we will get the information for you on the serial number or year. Re: Gnilop EVENRUDDE 9.9 -NOT CHARGING

first off, need a model number or year 9.9?

the only number i could find is near the gas inlet and it was 100/61 . Odd thing happened when i had the battery tested this am at auto zone after charging (2amp) for a day and it tested -good battery! So back in the boat it and then i started the motor took off the neg cable and the volt meter showed +17, so it is charging and i don't have a clue of what happened ! Could it have been the marina when they charged it? It was very low on water in the cell holes, took a lot to fill it and they may have cooked it on high charge. Or i wonder if it could be that ignition switch that was loose and it said on the switch that the dot on the switch has to be pointed down and perhaps it could have moved but i don't know how critical that is.
In any event this is a great site for new owner of older boats that is on ss and needed help. I think it's charging and may run some more and i am very sorry for the long read!. Gp - painesville ohio

The model number you need to locate should be on a plate on the transom clamp bracket. It may also be on a disc on the power head.

You say, "the only number i could find is near the gas inlet and it was 100/61"

You are misreading that number. What you are reading as 6 is in fact symbol intended to represent an oil droplet. The plate then indicates a fuel mix of 100 parts gas to 1 part oil
BUT DO NOT RUN IT ON 100:1 ..... RUN IT ON 50:1

That decal, which should have been removed many years ago , does however tell us that the engine dates from 1985, '86 or '87

I assume you are happy that it is in fact charging the battery OK.

You will see fairly high voltages 16 or even 17, possibly higher, when the battery is fully charged because that model does not have a voltage regulator, just a simple non regulated rectifier.

BUT DO NOT disconnect the battery while the engine is running ... you could blow the rectifier.

Also take great care to never connect the battery the wrong way round. That will blow the rectifier in an instant.

If you battery has been run very low on electrolyte level it may well not have much of a life to look forward to. Check the level regularly and top up with deionised water when necessary.

Re: Gnilop EVENRUDDE 9.9 -NOT CHARGING

Thanks again for the info and greatly appreciated help, i will try to get through this boating season by having a little fun fishing with the wife, (that's the only thing i can do with her now) and then when i have the pontoon boat taken out of the water i can do some modifications to the back of the boat and wall it off so some s.o.b can't steal my gas tank again and maybe i can see if i can put the older 20hp evenrude on it in place of the 9.9, they may be in the same age bracket and they only thing is the 20 has a tiller arm still on it but it is a electric start. Any idea on this would be welcome tool. Thank you again,= gary poling
